Textured Walls: Fresh Ideas for the Accent Wall

rock-wall-bathroom

The Jigsaw Designers have always been advocates for painting accent walls  fun colors, bold stripes, metallics or whatever trend is of the moment.  But, sometimes a little texture is just what you’re looking for.    From textured wallpaper to stone walls, in this blog we’ll show you some great ways to create a dramatic accent wall rich in texture.

rock-wall-blog

The image above is a dining room with an accent wall made of stone.  The rustic ranch style room can keep it’s neutral palette, yet it attains a wow factor with the beautiful texture in the stone.  One would think that too much space would be taken up in a room with this size stone, however these are half stones which are installed with a similar process of how brick is installed.

wood-and-rock

We’ve always been a big fan of the exposed brick wall as a matter of fact we’ve dedicated an entire blog to it.  Taking the brick accent wall a step further by painting the brick can be a great trick to adding drama like in the charcoal painted brick below, or neutralizing a color palette like the white brick in the bedroom photo.

brick-wall-1Additionally, wallpaper can be a great way to add texture to your space.  With an almost unlimited amount to choose from,  one can express their own personality through many differnt styles, colors, patterns and types.   Today, the market can satisfy any style need one can desire from grasscloth, flocked, and even paintable wallpaper.  Grasscloth can fit into many styles of space and it pairs especially well with Cape Cod, Traditional and Beach Chic, while flocked pairs perfectly with the old Hollywood Glamazon and Classic French styles.  For more information on Wallpaper, see our previous Wallpaper Blogs, and stay tuned for the upcoming blog focused solely on Grasscloth and natural wallpapers.

Paintable wallpaper is hot trend right now because it allows you to love your texture, but be fickle with the color you want to keep.  Perfect for you design lovers and DIY types that like changing things up every season or so.  Also a great idea for stair risers, and ceilings.

Fireplace Trends-Marble

Welcomed is the chill in the air, signaling fall to finally arrive.  The coziest time of year.  What better time to tackle that fireplace update you’ve been dreaming about for a while.  So, dust off those work boots and get ready for a fireplace demolition.   In the next few posts, we’ll share some of our favorite and/or most requested fireplace updates that our clients are asking for.

The first post will cover the ever coveted marble.   Found now in almost every room of the house.  Authentic marble, porcelain that looks like marble, marble wallpaper, you name it, it’s out there and everybody wants it.  With its former reputation as being only for the extravagant, marble has now been made accessible to everyone.

  1. The slab.  Insanely beautiful in a few words.  Why we love it?  Its natural, without seams it exquisite and quite impressive if you can spend the dough on it.  Slabs can cost from $1,000 to $6,000 on average depending on the quality and type.  Favorites are Calacatta (not Calcutta as many say), and Cararra (not Carerra as many others will say).  Both lovely and distinct, floor to ceiling…yes, please.

2. Marble Tiles.  Artistic and personalized in a few words.  Why we love it?  So many sizes, styles, shapes and prices available.  Honeycomb, penny tile, subway, arabesque are all fun examples of marble tiles in the marketplace.  One can select a tile shape that is befitting their personality to express in their space.  Big oversized tiles like the image below are great for the floor to ceiling look without paying for the slab.

3. Cast Marble.  Statement making in a few words.  Why we love it?  Cast marble is striking with a high design reputation.  Intricate details, crisp modern cuts all can be achieved with the cast fireplace.  Cast marble are referring to the mantel surrounds while in the interior is cast stone, as seen below.

Tabletop Tips: The Coffee Table Conundrum

scuptural = floral=books

The constant quandary; how to decorate one’s tabletop.  Are you constantly rearranging and shuffling your coffee table decor to find the right balance?  For such a small surface area, this space is always the most perplexing.   In this post, the Jigsaw Designers are addressing the coffee table dilemma with some simple tips to help you find the right balance.

balance square table

Tip #1 Books, books and more books! This is an easy one. ‘Coffee table’ books are easy to come by, make great gifts and you’re bound to have a couple laying around somewhere. Use books to make a statement, express your personality, or simply be an accent color like for example the bold, Hot Pink book about Yves Saint Laurent.  Serves two purposes: 1. color, 2. shares a bit of nostalgia with those who love the fashion.

Stack books with a candle or small item on top, or several stacks around the table. If you have a two tier table, stack them top and bottom.   Stack them on a tray in the center or off to one side.

Above and below Books

Above and Below Scupltural +floral+ books

Tip #2 Add something natural like an orchid or flower arrangement. Succulents are hugely popular and there are even some faux plants that look rather real. We usually opt of the real thing, but sometimes a bouquet of silk peonies will do the trick.

Tip #3 Add an element of surprise; an interesting sculpture, a classic obelisk or even a purple foot from Jonathan Adler. Whatever the case, make it quirky, and make it fun.

Tip #4 Don’t even think about letting that remote control be seen. Even if its a college bachelor pad, No Remotes visible please.

Keep it neat and tidy, sometimes less is more for your vignette and sometimes it just feels right to pile it one. Architectural Trend-Arched Windows and Doors

arch dining overlooking water

Gazing out over the Agean from an arched window or doorway is the quintessential scene while on holiday in Greece.  Brining this dreamy vacation style of architecture into the home is a trend that we embrace at Jigsaw and in this post we will explore the many different ways to express this classic look.

We will start with the arched door:

Arched entranceways with full and glass panels allow light to pour into a room, and blur the lines between indoors and out.

arch glass door

The arched window:

Round top windows are a classic style that adds interest and character to any space.  The options are vast with the round top window either opening with a push out French casement,  double hung or hardware push out as seen just below in descending order.

The arched shower:

Creating a personal retreat in the master bath is taken a step further with an arched show door.  A traditional curved arch will suit most homes, but get creative with a Moroccan or Spanish shape if it compliments your style.

The alcove:

An arched alcove can take on many forms from a small top-lit gallery style down a long hallway, or above a sink in the bath or kitchen could add that perfect touch to this timeless design detail.

Bar Cart Crazy

Have a spot that needs something, but can’t put your finger on it?   Then spruce up your space with a festive bar cart.  In this post we’ll explore some different ideas, styles and tips for adding a little hipster flair to your space with a fun bar cart.

Finding the right bar cart for your space may sound like a simple task, but there are a multitude of choices to be had.  From a thrift store find for a DIY project, or the ultimate authentic 1930s french version sold by The Golden Triangle for a cool $5,300!  Whatever the case, hopefully by the end of this post you’ll decide which type tickles your fancy.

We could infinitely discuss the different carts in the marketplace, but for time’s sake we’ll highlight a few styles that the Jigsaw team like to use for added interest in a space.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

For starters, we like using a more masculine style in a room that evokes a feeling of academia like a study or library.   In this instance, you can’t beat the round metal bar from Restoration Hardware that was inspired by 1920S German light bulb voltage tester.  While it is uber cool, it may not fit into some home styles.  Other options on the industrial modern side of things, consider a minimalistic metal cart for a rustic or loft style space.

For a more ladylike vibe, a Chippendale or rattan cart may be the answer.  Equally, a classic metal and glass cart if fabulous when tricked out with beautiful bottles and fun pop art.

Once you’ve selected your cart, simply dress it in your style with a little whimsy of course!  Chic glasses and bar ware plus some quirky objects for conversation starters are always a plus.

The modernist may struggle with this item that could seemingly end up as clutter, but a little lucite number could be the remedy for this type of OCD.  Meticulously lined bottles and no fuss trinkets will result in a perfectly curated place to pamper your guests with your cocktail d’jour.

Art We Love: Vintage Lifestyle Photography-Featuring Slim Aarons

JA living room

Art takes on many forms.  While styles ebb and flow in the mainstream, so to speak, selecting art still remains a very intimate decision based on personal style and what appeals to ones eye.  Vintage photography is nothing new to the art or interior design scene, however we are seeing it displayed in fresh new ways and being reproduced by high profile designers.  In this post, the Jigsaw Designers selected famed photographer Slim Aarons as the feature photographer for this months Art We Love.  (Seen in self portrait below.)

slim aarons self portrait

Aarons joined the army at age 18 and served as a combat photographer in World War II.  Afterwards, leaving Aarons with an extreme dislike for war he famously stated, “The only beach worth landing on was decorated with beautiful, seminude girls tanning in a tranquil sun.” Hence leading in him the desire to photograph ‘attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places’ as he himself coined.  One spot-on example would be the image of sunbathing beauties on St. Tropez beach below.

st tropez slim aarons

aarons_catherinewilke

Aarons photographed the jet setters and society types from the 50’s to the 80’s.  Trekking across the world from Capri, St. Tropez, Palm Springs and then some; he yachted, vacationed and observed the celebrities and aristocrats at their leisure, often times from inside their own estates and villas.

Not your typical college dorm poster; what brings these time transcending images to life again are most often the process used for display.   A photograph is printed from scans of the original negative that are then mounted on aluminum and faced with museum quality plexiglass.  Processing from a negative allows one to create the image at any size, even a wall mural in the mid-century baby nursery below.  But, most often the museum quality plexi brings added luster to the color saturated images Aarons was famous for.

One of the most beloved images featured here is called Poolside Gossip which was photographed at the famous Kaufman house in Palm Springs, CA.  The image of society ladies relaxing and simultaneously “stirring the pot” is charming and yet, familiar to us all.  This image is available in a variety of sizes at www.jigsawdesigngroup.com along with many other Slim Aarons favorites.

Summer by the sea in the south of France beckons you in the timeless image of celebs sun worshiping at the Hotel Du Cap in Antibes.  Ultimately, Aarons’ imagery draws you in and makes you feel welcome, making his work a fabulous compliment to ones swinging stylish pad.

The Power of the Accent Chair

birdcage mitchell and gold chair

Spring is about to blossom and that leaves some us desiring a little refresher to our abode.  Updating with an accent chair or two can be just the game changer you are looking for.  The birdcage chair above by Mitchell & Gold called the Bastille chair (for obvious reasons) could just the right change you need; featured here in a metal cage of stainless steel with Tibetan fur.  In this post we will highlight some of the top trend elements to look for when you start your search.

J A opening photo Bacharach-Swivel-Chairs-styled-jonathan-adler

Trend #1-The Swivel Chair.  Jonathan Adler hit the nail on the head when depicting the Studio 54 era vibe of the Louche chair in velvet…really…could we love this chair more?  The Thayer Coggin swivel below is a bit barber-shop-meets-automobile and we are loving it for its proportion and matte gold mixed with cream leather.

thayer coggin swivel chair

A trend we reported on last year was about a surge in lucite (aka acrylic) options in the marketplace.  While the trend is going strong in traditional clear, we are seeing the color morph into a smokey color that is so hot.  For example the Raphael Lucite and Sheepskin chair or the Smokey Lucite swivel from the aforementioned Mitchell & Gold.

Raphael Lucite and sheep skin

Another trend to explore is the metal framed chair.  Sleek and polished to high shine screams Yves Saint Laurent luxe life.   Style and price run the gamut, but less is more with this style shifting focus on the frame.  Shown here in graphite with stainless, Mongolian sheep skin, and also a blush velvet and gold metal by West Elm priced very reasonably $599!  Mix the modern frame with a luxe fabric for glam chic style.

Cut-out shapes are styles straight out of the 60’s; from backless, to arm rest cut-outs the look has a vintage-fresh vibe.  Keep it in present decade with menswear upholstery  or simple neutrals to keep the look interesting and not distracting to eye.

The accent chair is meant to be a stand out item so you can step outside of your comfort zone a little and have some fun with it.  For more information on accent chair trends or the styles featured in this post, simply leave a comment or visit the contact page on the Jigsaw Design Group website at www.jigsawdesigngroup.com.  Someone will quickly contact you with more information.  Please subscribe to the blog for more informative articles like these, and check out our Facebook page for more tips and images!  Be sure to ‘like us’ on Facebook!   Now join us on Googleplus too!
