Sleeping Beauty-Best Beds Summer 2016

19th C French 4 Poster RH

Due to an oversaturated market, a continual decorating conundrum is finding that perfect bed to rest your pretty head.  Since the average person spends one third of the day in the aforementioned bed, and it likely getting more use than any other furniture purchase you may make… it should be perfect.  Perfect in home style, personal style, size, and ,of course, comfort.  Herein lies the quandary…so which bed is for me?

Am I a poster bed gal/guy like the Restoration Hardware’s 19th Century French Four-Poster bed above?  In this post we’ll explore just which bed category trends are most befitting of ourselves.

For those lovers of reclaimed wood, a couple options on the market come to mind because they are clean with a hint of Mid-Century style to play down the rustic feel of the wood.  One being from West Elm (Alexa-as seen in the first photo) and the other, Living Spaces (Kai-2nd photo).  Both of these styles are reasonably priced and pair well with a variety of linen choices.

Another trend that continues to grow is the upholstered bed.  If one desires to be wrapped in fabric from head to foot and tufted flawlessly, the Churchill bed in Belgian Linen from Restoration Hardware is the answer.

Or, add a bit of flair with a nailhead dotted headboard.  This look is very flexible ranging from traditional, beachy, and even industrial.   The Luna Nail Trim Headboard from Allmodern.com is not only beautiful, it’s also a steal of a price!

For a modern, no fuss-no muss, upholstered linen bed, one can’t beat the Nixon Platform bed, also from Allmodern.com.  It’s pure, with clean simple lines a true minimalist will love.

Think outside of the box with Serena and Lily’s Carson Bed.  At about – $2500 this bed brings on the texture in a fresh way.  Beautifully crafted strips of abaca (some dyed black, some bleached), create interesting lines in mellow tones to add texture, while still showing off your linens.

Uber cool day-beds are a hot trend that we love at Jigsaw.  Outside on the veranda, poolside, or in your cozy library there may not be a lot of sleeping on these beauties, but there is a lot of style…well, maybe sleep for that overnight guest after that stellar party .  Featured here is Jonathan Adler’s Maxime day bed, and Serena and Lily’s Avalon Daybed in rattan, beach chic at its best.

Bar Cart Crazy

smart cart

Have a spot that needs something, but can’t put your finger on it?   Then spruce up your space with a festive bar cart.  In this post we’ll explore some different ideas, styles and tips for adding a little hipster flair to your space with a fun bar cart.

pretty yellow bcart lemons

Finding the right bar cart for your space may sound like a simple task, but there are a multitude of choices to be had.  From a thrift store find for a DIY project, or the ultimate authentic 1930s french version sold by The Golden Triangle for a cool $5,300!  Whatever the case, hopefully by the end of this post you’ll decide which type tickles your fancy.

We could infinitely discuss the different carts in the marketplace, but for time’s sake we’ll highlight a few styles that the Jigsaw team like to use for added interest in a space.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

For starters, we like using a more masculine style in a room that evokes a feeling of academia like a study or library.   In this instance, you can’t beat the round metal bar from Restoration Hardware that was inspired by 1920S German light bulb voltage tester.  While it is uber cool, it may not fit into some home styles.  Other options on the industrial modern side of things, consider a minimalistic metal cart for a rustic or loft style space.

For a more ladylike vibe, a Chippendale or rattan cart may be the answer.  Equally, a classic metal and glass cart if fabulous when tricked out with beautiful bottles and fun pop art.

Once you’ve selected your cart, simply dress it in your style with a little whimsy of course!  Chic glasses and bar ware plus some quirky objects for conversation starters are always a plus.

The modernist may struggle with this item that could seemingly end up as clutter, but a little lucite number could be the remedy for this type of OCD.  Meticulously lined bottles and no fuss trinkets will result in a perfectly curated place to pamper your guests with your cocktail d’jour.

The Power of the Accent Chair

birdcage mitchell and gold chair

Spring is about to blossom and that leaves some us desiring a little refresher to our abode.  Updating with an accent chair or two can be just the game changer you are looking for.  The birdcage chair above by Mitchell & Gold called the Bastille chair (for obvious reasons) could just the right change you need; featured here in a metal cage of stainless steel with Tibetan fur.  In this post we will highlight some of the top trend elements to look for when you start your search.

J A opening photo Bacharach-Swivel-Chairs-styled-jonathan-adler

Trend #1-The Swivel Chair.  Jonathan Adler hit the nail on the head when depicting the Studio 54 era vibe of the Louche chair in velvet…really…could we love this chair more?  The Thayer Coggin swivel below is a bit barber-shop-meets-automobile and we are loving it for its proportion and matte gold mixed with cream leather.

thayer coggin swivel chair

A trend we reported on last year was about a surge in lucite (aka acrylic) options in the marketplace.  While the trend is going strong in traditional clear, we are seeing the color morph into a smokey color that is so hot.  For example the Raphael Lucite and Sheepskin chair or the Smokey Lucite swivel from the aforementioned Mitchell & Gold.

Another trend to explore is the metal framed chair.  Sleek and polished to high shine screams Yves Saint Laurent luxe life.   Style and price run the gamut, but less is more with this style shifting focus on the frame.  Shown here in graphite with stainless, Mongolian sheep skin, and also a blush velvet and gold metal by West Elm priced very reasonably $599!  Mix the modern frame with a luxe fabric for glam chic style.

Cut-out shapes are styles straight out of the 60’s; from backless, to arm rest cut-outs the look has a vintage-fresh vibe.  Keep it in present decade with menswear upholstery  or simple neutrals to keep the look interesting and not distracting to eye.

The accent chair is meant to be a stand out item so you can step outside of your comfort zone a little and have some fun with it.  For more information on accent chair trends or the styles featured in this post, simply leave a comment or visit the contact page on the Jigsaw Design Group website at www.jigsawdesigngroup.com.  Someone will quickly contact you with more information.  Please subscribe to the blog for more informative articles like these, and check out our Facebook page for more tips and images!  Be sure to ‘like us’ on Facebook!   Now join us on Googleplus too!

Take a Seat

JA pouf

Extra seating is always a plus.   At Jigsaw, we love adding  seating in a fun and playful way.   Using benches, stools and whimsical poufs can add that perfect finishing touch.

Wether you want functional seating or simply to add a little personality, placing a bench at the end of the bed is always a lovely touch.  The Jigsaw designers are big fans of the tufted bench and of course, the mongolian sheep skin bench as featured below.

These Moroccan poufs are a fun option for adding seating to your space.  Available by many different designers at a variety of price points from  Jonathan Adler to Target.

Add a pop of color to play up a neutral room,  or use a metallic silver or gold instead of a basic neutral.  Can’t make up your mind…white is always chic!

If you prefer something with more structure and functionality, then the classic X bench is possibly for you.    This clean and classy shape is so flexible and can be dressed up or down with nail heads, cow hides, ikat prints, you name it.
Finding the bench that suits your personality is the key.  Wether traditional, bohemian, or sleek and modern the bench can be the perfect finishing touch for your space.  As trends change you can always reupholster the fabric to update your style.
Behind the couch, at the foot of the bed, or under a console table.  Tuck these little gems in the best place for you.  These additions should be convenient and balanced in your space.

Above all, have fun with your decorative seating.  For more information on benches, poufs, and ottomans, please contact us at Jigsaw Design Group for design advise and resources.  Check us out on GooglePlus and be sure to like us on Facebook!

Pretty in Pink-Color of the Month

opening image pink 1

Pink is not just for Barbie anymore.  2016 is fairing a very fine start for this ladylike hue.  Launching these girly vibes into the new year were top celebs on the Golden Globe red carpet.  While these divas rocked these gorgeous frocks,  the Jigsaw designers will take you down the red carpet in home decor in their pretty pink shades.

Kate Hudson nude w touch of pink

Kate Hudson dazzled in her nude meets blush beaded dress reminiscent of I Dream of Jeanine.  This soft muted tone is so neutral is can be used on a grand scale or little touches.  Like this fun puckered lips print found on etsy. Playing well with most colors, but we find it especially fun with bright yellow in this lighthearted kids space.

Her 20’s vibe with oodles of fringe in pale pink turned heads as usual.  The sheen of her dress and the era are reflected in this gorgeous bedroom with pale pink walls, velvet headboard and curtains.  We are also loving this pale pink glam velvet sofa with clean lines making the shape more flexible for different genres of style.

Leslie Mann won our hearts in the blush category contrary to famed Perez Hilton’s opinion.

While silk chiffon in blush was complimented by delicate beading, the Jigsaw Design team like to rock this girly color with studs.  For example this headboard with nailheads also found on Etsy.  Likewise, taking this delicate color to new heights like the cloud geometric print by Lola and Lila could we a lovely finishing touch to your space.

On the other hand, we can’t get enough of this bubble gum Eames Ball chair.  For the more conservative side, try a classic Chippendale style chair in this timeless color.

Tufted Love-Jigsaw’s Top Picks- Chesterfield Sofas

A passion for the elegant and timeless Chesterfield sofa is on the rise.  This handsome classic tufted sofa can fit harmoniously into most genres of style; from a city loft to a vintage lair the tufted sofa adds that perfect touch.

Legend has it that the 4th Earl of Chesterfield commission the first tufted sofa with a deep seat in the early 1700s hence its name sake.  While being both patron of the arts and a politician, Lord Stanhope and Voltaire likely had some interesting debates about life on his comfortable yet groundbreaking sofa.

Interestingly, Anthropology’s  Lyre Chesterfield, which is modeled after this 18th century treasure goes for a cool $3K.    The Jigsaw team’s favorite attribute of their rendition is it’s availability in 18 colors.  Finished with button-tufts, trimmed with nailheads,  and rolled English arms complete this quintessential style.  For those lovers of antiques and traditional elegance this is the sofa for you.

We feature our favorite Chesterfields in velvet throughout this post as this rich texture creates such an inviting and luxurious layer to a room.  We love the chic and sophisticated tone on tone teal blue  u-shaped sofa in Schumacher silk velvet with matching walls.

For the Love of Lacquer

black laq console

High gloss Lacquer has made a big come back, and it’s not the lacquer of the 80’s, too often paired with a Nagel print.  No, this lacquer trend is bold and fresh with style that will be shining on for quite some time.

Red laq buffet

Furniture designer Jonathan Adler has this market segment pegged with an enormous collection of lacquer pieces to choose from.  He uses bold colors that pop the gloss to hi-def proportions and compliments each style with bold hardware options in brass or nickel.  We love his Turner Cabinet with it’s modern take mixed with chinoiserie flair.  This style would make a perfect console or buffet for your dining room that would wow your guests.

JA Turner cabinet blue

Brighten up your dining experience by adding a lacquer table into the mix.  Whether your style is modern, transitional or hollywood regency you simply can’t go wrong with the striking look of a white or black high gloss dining table.  While perfectly reflecting twinkling candle light your lacquer table will be a definite conversation starter.

Rossetto white lac table

Really ramp up this look with lacquer wall paint.  This ultimate brave move will work perfectly in a special common area like the dining room or a study.

If the love of lacquer is new to you,  then a safe starting place for this bold look is the bedroom, of course.  Start small with a pair of bedside tables like the West Elm white lacquer nightstand in the following image.  Really feeling the love of lacquer? Well, go big in kelly green with this delightful dresser from Room Service with perfectly paired gold hardware.

Touches of lacquer can mix into almost any style of home in some way.  The glossy finish adds that perfect extra layer of texture.  Play up the look with fun accessories.  Lacquer trays for tidying your kitchy goodies,  a bar tray, or even bath accessories are all quick and relatively inexpensive ways to get the trend while it’s hot.

Back to School-Study Spaces

cork board ghost chair

Summer break has come and gone, so it’s time to hit the books.  The fresh start to a new school year is the perfect time to update or create an inspiring study space for your young scholar.  In this post we will explore some creative space ideas for dual study, small spaces and DIY projects.

industrial pipe shelving

Whether you have a large or small space to work with, some common threads for an inspiring study space your kids can relate to is to always include a swanky chair paired with fun accessories.  Kids and teens love color so popping their study room with a boldly colored Eames inspired chair  or adding some interesting texture with a funky Mongolian mohair swivel will add comfort with a modern flair to their homework time.

Color can be invigorating for the mind as we all naturally react to certain colors.   Include a splash of something bright to motivate their senses during long hours of study.  Brightly painted desk, curtains or desk accessories are always easy to find.

Our kids are as busy as we are when it comes to keeping a schedule.  From classes to extracurricular actives they lead hectic lives for so young.  Create a little ease in keeping up with that schedule with a chalkboard wall in their study space.  Great for brainstorming ideas and the occasions doodle for a brain break.  Chalk board paint can be found at most paint retailers including Home Depot, Lowes and even Michael’s.

Study Chalk Board

So what do you do if you’ve got two…or even three kids…where can they all study?  For multiple study spaces in one common area, use one long tabletop to streamline the space. Define the separate spaces with personalized accessories and tailor them by color or print to match each child’s personality.  This can be a fun DYI project for the whole family that gets the kids involved in selecting colors and accessories that express who they are.

Homework stations

Sure all these ideas are great and who wouldn’t love to have an entire room to dedicate to homework.  Well, some of us don’t have that kind of space.  We’ve found some great small space ideas that fit snugly into a small corner or even a closet to keep that space out of site when not in use.  The key to a small space study area is keeping accessories to a minimum while still making it charming and functional.  Paint or wallpaper the inside of a closet or pantry and keep shelving neat for a professionally finished look.
