Trend Setting Rugs

When designing a room the first thing you will do of course is select a color and theme. The next obvious and very important step is to choose a rug. Typically it will take up more space than any other item in your room and it will be a very large block of color to live with. In this post we will explore the top trends in rugs today, and also show you some fun new ways we are seeing them styled.

The cowhide rug is not just for the ranch house anymore. These beauties are popping up all over the spectrum in style. From shabby chic to modern this natural element finds itself right at home in most any interior. If you peruse the images below, the “French Country” pure ivory room is elevated with the gorgeous ivory hide rug.

Cowhide rugs are available in a rainbow of colors, literally, pink, green, blue, red you name it. However, the natural hide shape is still the most popular skin to own. The strongest trend we are seeing right now is patterned cowhides. Some of the rugs have unbelievable workmanship, creating herringbone patterns, geometrics and even Greek Key designs. In the images below you can see patchwork patterns in orange and black rug and pop- arty geometrics that raise the rug standard of cool.

Beyond the scope of cowhides we are seeing trends in bold brightly colored rugs in reds, purples, blues and greens. Rugs have shifted from afterthought to focal point over the last few year and they are steeling all the attention. Layering rug- on-rug is a new trendy way to keep your sisal rug, but update it by throwing a fun bold patterned rug or cow hide on top. Just allow enough of the bottom layer rug to show so the look makes sense.

The days of the Arabesque are finally being played out and making room for hounds tooth and herringbone that add a chic masculine touch to the space. Soft camel and ivory hounds tooth or bold black and white, this pattern looks great oversized or on a smaller scale.

Zigzags, chevron, and herringbone are still holding on strong and they are available in so many colors and piles. Classic black and white always make a bold statement and the Jigsaw Designers love the mixed color chevron styles as well as the multi colored cowhide herringbone. These art deco throwbacks are pricey but worth every penny are.

The season of color and exciting patterns is upon us. While the rug is usually a more temporary purchase than carpeting, we hope this post has inspired you to step out of the neutral box when you are doing your rug shopping. Be bold and have fun with it.

Installing new flooring in your home or office is a big investment, and your choice of flooring is one you’ll have to live with for a long time. So where do you start? In this post we’ll explore some of today’s hottest trends in flooring to help you arrive at this big and often daunting decision.

Hardwood floors are timeless and will always be one of the most sought after flooring materials. While the love of hardwood floors doesn’t change, the style does. One trend we are seeing is standard hardwoods in a chevron or herringbone layout. This vintage French style really dresses up the hardwoods and creates visual interest in the room. The herringbone layout works well in all interior design styles from Rustic Modern to the Traditional home.

More trends that we love are the unique finishes now being applied to hardwood flooring. From standard hardwood layout to patterned layout, the new installations are being stained and scraped in alternative ways. Washed grey stain is really dominating the hardwood scene right now. Visually it’s subtle, refreshing and soothing. The Jigsaw Designers also like seeing a lot of color variation in hardwood flooring, and using natural colors like walnut and pecan show this variation the best.

The method of instillation is also being varied to create a unique and custom look. For example, board lengths can be varied from four inches to eight inches for a completely fresh look. This keeps the floor from looking too manufactured or laminated, and instead creates a one-of-a-kind couture flooring. An added bonus is requesting a variation in board lengths which can actually prove cost effective as a typical install will require a uniform look.

Custom tile work is not just for the bathroom and kitchen anymore. Unlock your master bedrooms potential with gorgeous stylized tile flooring. This chic look can complete the décor in a way carpet cannot. In the images below, see how the black and white chevron floor is the building block for the style of the entire room. The modern chevron flooring plus the black and white décor mixed with the rustic door create an original look that is timeless yet has a bit of edge.

One hot trend on the rise worth mentioning is the mixing of hardwoods and ceramic or porcelain tiles. The vibe is highly artistic and you can be as creative as you want to be. The Jigsaw Designers love mixing these two materials in a herringbone fashion for a dining room or bathroom. Wrapping the tile floors up the wall is also a trend we are watching closely. It is a great way to add architectural interest instead of using wanes coating or chair railing. This look is a little unconventional, but it screams style.

Back in Black

Upon the dawning of the little black dress in 1926, Coco Chanel made the color black instantly chic. Since then the infamous color has encapsulated style, class and edge. The unwritten rule in interior design has been to add something black to every room. Well, today that ‘something’ has taken on a much larger role. Explore with us the different ways to add this daring color to your home with this ultra-hot trend.

The Jigsaw Designers love adding black paint to the walls in any room. One black accent wall can make a huge impact whether you are painting a large or small area. A narrow wall at the end of a hallway, the large wall behind your headboard, whatever your comfort level is it will add high impact style. Next, choosing accessories in bright colors and metallics will really pop off the black and add drama. Adding a white crown molding or all white bedding to your bedroom can give the room balance and a crisp finish. The sophistication of this color will also create attention to the focal point of the room. However a wide range of black paint is available, our designers prefer using Matte Black which made its big come-back with celebrity automobiles. It’s more versatile and forgiving than a glossy finish, and adds the greatest wow factor in a room. The matte black look is hot and has been on the rise recently and is just finding its way into home interiors. While black is always in style the new matte black is taking center stage and we love it.

Always the color of optical illusion, this powerful hue is sexy and mysterious. We recently did a post on decorating your ceiling to complete the look of your space. Don’t let us stop you from adding black to the ceiling either. While one would think it would make the room appear smaller it’s actually quite the opposite effect. The black painted ceiling when complimented by lighter walls and ample natural light will result in an infinite look that makes a room feel as if it goes on forever.

Chances are your mother always told you to add something black to every room. Well, at the time she was probably referring to a piece of furniture or a picture frame and not an entire wall. This still deems great advice however. If you want to try the trend, but are a bit more color shy, it can easily be incorporated with furniture and accessories. If you are a bit more brave, try a piece on a grandeur scale like a sofa or buffet table. Otherwise, a black framed mirror, vintage chair or lamp can be a nice start.

We hope you will be inspired to experiment with the color black in any room of your home. It can be the perfect anchor in a room or spice up a hallway that gets overlooked. Forget all the myths you’ve been told about this adventurous color and decorate outside the lines!

Nature Does It Best

Living in the environmentally conscious age we live in really inspires each of us to think outside the box. Granted we have always been taught to go green, recycle and not to ever waste water…but who knew that 70 year old barn my grandfather built would be worth so much money…torn down that is. Reclaimed wood is one of the many ways designers and architects are thinking in a sustainable format. Essentially, the wood found in barns, snow fences, and other outdoor buildings that have stood the test of time have a proven record of sustainability and are still ready for good use.

Cedar and cypress wood are a few of these hearty materials that are being used in a myriad of ways. Known as “Reclaimed Wood”, this natural resource is extracted, de-metaled, cleaned and sometimes treated if necessary. The wood can then be used for the exterior of the home, interior walls, stair cases, art and furniture. The Jigsaw Designers like mixing the rustic look of vintage wood into a modern home giving it new life, for example installing a reclaimed wood wall with polished concrete flooring giving a new twist and added interest and texture to the home. A formal dining room can be given an earthy warm feel while still being perfectly proper and luxurious when adding a reclaimed wood dining table. Combing old with new brings a vintage-fresh feel and cozy familiarity to your home.

While at one time being hard to come by, reclaimed wood can be found easily from a variety of resources on the internet. One of our favorite operations is called Trestlewood based in Utah and Idaho. The cost of recycled lumber varies, and in an “as is” condition will be more expensive than new, green lumber. While furniture is quite diverse in quality, style and price, it can be found through small custom mom and pop operations to chains like Restoration Hardware. We love this gorgeous sustainable credenza by Urban Woods LA included in the photos below. Also on the rise, sustainable restaurants are a trend we are seeing a lot more of. The Jigsaw Designers remodeled the local LA eatery, Fatty’s Public House, and installed a unique reclaimed wood ceiling and eye catching wood interiors throughout as seen in the photos below.

Using natural and reclaimed materials is a trend that we know will evolve as these things do, but buying sustainable and reusing will never go out of style.
