Vainglorious Velvet

Forever hand-in-hand is the runway and interior design.  Eternally classic velvet has reemerged on the market in haute couture while simulanoulsy trending in the home decor  space.

Luxury designers in apparel, footwear and handbags are diving in head first to beautiful rich colors in wine, forest green and misty pinks.  What’s to stop a gal from matching her handbag and her bedding?

This beloved fabric has been synonymous with fashion and interiors since the Renaissance.  Though the textile has been watered down through the centuries and can be found at any price point, the velvet we are in love with has a great hand and quality that can stand the test of time.  The Jigsaw Designers are big fans of Jonathan Adler’s velvet for example his rich sapphire blue Gold Finger collection that is trimmed in gold metal as seen in the photo below.

Soft cream and grey velvets are timeless and an ideal way to impliment the color for longevity.  The colors are also perfect for the holidays too.  Create a winter white space with hints of greys, gold, and creams for a Joyeux Noel.

Grasscloth Reimagined-Natural Fiber Wallpaper

jute-grass-cloth-ja-blue

The Grasscloth trend has been on the rise again for some time now.  Attributing to its recent rapid growth are many factors: the desire for something more natural in the market, history repeating itself, and the reimaging of this long time traditional product.

grasscloth-hallway

Grasscloth is usually comprised of an assortment of natural materials; arrowroot, jute, sisal, hemp, and cork to name a few.  Each have different strand thickeness and color resulting in a unique texture.  Just below are images of two different cloths, the first is Jute in Blue and the second, is Arrowroot in Grey, both by Phillip Jeffries.  Despite the colors, one can easily see the similarities and the differences, which therefore add a timeless texture to any space.

jefferies-juicy-jute-close-up

arrowroot-close-up-jeffereies

These materials often come at a rather significant price between $75 to $350 per roll.  Though the price is easy to defend considering the painstaking process in manufacturing the product.  The complicated procedure is done by weaving together thin cotton threads and grass strands, and then fastening these weaves to a lightweight backing like rice paper.  Typically, these wallpapers do not come pasted, so a professional contractor is recommended for hanging this delicate product.

Some of the Jigsaw Design team’s favorite players are Phillip Jeffries and Schumacher who have a corner on the market, and rightfully so.  Jeffries is constantly taking new perspectives in the grasscloth segment by creating unique finishes and designs.  For example the grasscloth cloth Rivet Collection, and the Metallic Grasscloth Collection as featured here.

While pairing beautifully with the seaside or traditional home, designers like Jigsaw have broken down those barriers and integrated this timeless classic into modern and transitional/contemporary homes across the country.

Textured Walls: Fresh Ideas for the Accent Wall

rock-wall-bathroom

The Jigsaw Designers have always been advocates for painting accent walls  fun colors, bold stripes, metallics or whatever trend is of the moment.  But, sometimes a little texture is just what you’re looking for.    From textured wallpaper to stone walls, in this blog we’ll show you some great ways to create a dramatic accent wall rich in texture.

rock-wall-blog

The image above is a dining room with an accent wall made of stone.  The rustic ranch style room can keep it’s neutral palette, yet it attains a wow factor with the beautiful texture in the stone.  One would think that too much space would be taken up in a room with this size stone, however these are half stones which are installed with a similar process of how brick is installed.

wood-and-rock

We’ve always been a big fan of the exposed brick wall as a matter of fact we’ve dedicated an entire blog to it.  Taking the brick accent wall a step further by painting the brick can be a great trick to adding drama like in the charcoal painted brick below, or neutralizing a color palette like the white brick in the bedroom photo.

charcoal-brick-wall white-brick-bedroom

brick-wall-1Additionally, wallpaper can be a great way to add texture to your space.  With an almost unlimited amount to choose from,  one can express their own personality through many differnt styles, colors, patterns and types.   Today, the market can satisfy any style need one can desire from grasscloth, flocked, and even paintable wallpaper.  Grasscloth can fit into many styles of space and it pairs especially well with Cape Cod, Traditional and Beach Chic, while flocked pairs perfectly with the old Hollywood Glamazon and Classic French styles.  For more information on Wallpaper, see our previous Wallpaper Blogs, and stay tuned for the upcoming blog focused solely on Grasscloth and natural wallpapers.

Paintable wallpaper is hot trend right now because it allows you to love your texture, but be fickle with the color you want to keep.  Perfect for you design lovers and DIY types that like changing things up every season or so.  Also a great idea for stair risers, and ceilings.

Fireplace Trends-Marble

framed-marble-slab-fireplace

Welcomed is the chill in the air, signaling fall to finally arrive.  The coziest time of year.  What better time to tackle that fireplace update you’ve been dreaming about for a while.  So, dust off those work boots and get ready for a fireplace demolition.   In the next few posts, we’ll share some of our favorite and/or most requested fireplace updates that our clients are asking for.

The first post will cover the ever coveted marble.   Found now in almost every room of the house.  Authentic marble, porcelain that looks like marble, marble wallpaper, you name it, it’s out there and everybody wants it.  With its former reputation as being only for the extravagant, marble has now been made accessible to everyone.

  1. The slab.  Insanely beautiful in a few words.  Why we love it?  Its natural, without seams it exquisite and quite impressive if you can spend the dough on it.  Slabs can cost from $1,000 to $6,000 on average depending on the quality and type.  Favorites are Calacatta (not Calcutta as many say), and Cararra (not Carerra as many others will say).  Both lovely and distinct, floor to ceiling…yes, please.

2. Marble Tiles.  Artistic and personalized in a few words.  Why we love it?  So many sizes, styles, shapes and prices available.  Honeycomb, penny tile, subway, arabesque are all fun examples of marble tiles in the marketplace.  One can select a tile shape that is befitting their personality to express in their space.  Big oversized tiles like the image below are great for the floor to ceiling look without paying for the slab.

3. Cast Marble.  Statement making in a few words.  Why we love it?  Cast marble is striking with a high design reputation.  Intricate details, crisp modern cuts all can be achieved with the cast fireplace.  Cast marble are referring to the mantel surrounds while in the interior is cast stone, as seen below.

Cannabis Dispensaries-The New Social Scene Among the Cannabis Community

dispincary-2-apothocarium-sfran

Complements of the growing legalization of marijuana/cannabis dispensaries, cannabis dispensaries are popping up everywhere.  What were once haunted by a negative perception, the dispensary marketplace is evolving into chic new hangouts among the cannabis community.

Jigsaw Design Group has found themselves being a forerunner in this industry in bringing hip design to the sudden competitive market in Southern California.  “We focus on designing beautiful and welcoming spaces, we are also continually educating ourselves on the best environments to house the products [plants and food], displaying the merchandise, and clinical building regulations,” shares Michelle the principle designer for the firm.  “Thanks to our renderings services our reach is not limited to California, we can create great design for facilities all across the country, and then depending on the clients needs, we can do the install or simply render the designs for the client to seek out their own contractors,” Michelle further explains.

This industry is fast growing and a newly acceptable industry. Twenty-five states and District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form.  Soon, there will be more and more states jumping on board and the demand for appealing design for dispensaries will be in paramount.

Meanwhile, dispensaries are becoming the new social scene, and just as in the food and beverage industry, people want to frequent places that are inviting and beautiful.  From the lobby area to the retail space, creating a comfortable atmosphere that is aesthetically pleasing will enhance the experience for the consumer as well as the staff’s work environment.

The Jigsaw Designers have installed a number of fresh looks for cannabis hangouts from hipster vibes, to glam settings with chandeliers, to graffiti walls.  It comes down to selecting a look that your customer can relate to, your personal style, and functionality.  As sampled in the following renderings, a few different looks are created for the same space, offering the client the opportunity to really capture the essence of the final product.

This emerging niche often has multiple moving parts so good design is key. Therefore, finding an interior designer or architect with industry specific experience is imperative.  For more information on cannabis dispensaries and dispensary design, leave a comment below or visit our contact page at www.jigsawdesigngroup.com and a  designer will get back to you.  Be sure to subscribe to the blog and like us on Facebook!

Visual Renderings-A Must Have For Great Design

cutler-render-open-photo

Interior Designers have always relied on visuals of some form.  A hand sketch, a precisely measured floor plan, and/or a story board or vision board.  While some of us can visualize what black lacquer paint might look on that particular wall you’ve had your eye on, most of us can’t.  Hence the need for a visual image.  The Jigsaw Design team takes the visual image a step further with a multi dimensional visual rendering to ensure their clients have a clear picture for their design.

The following images feature a Southern California beach bungalow master bathroom that was originally a small office and bathroom.  As typical, it was challenging for the client to see the possibility of the two spaces combined into one spectacular master bath retreat.

The next images are designed with a view from above.  See how the designer was able to layout different tile patterns with each rendering.

bungalow-tile-2

There is a true value in the designer taking this initial step for the client.  In the end, renderings of this quality save time and money for the client, designer and the contractors.

Let’s take a look at another Southern California residences.  We will walk through the designer’s process step by step.

  1. First a photo of the original room is taken, and the entire space is measured; walls, ceiling, doors, windows, archways, fireplaces.
  2. Then, the furniture is removed, and the room is emptied.
  3. Next, the designer begins adding in furniture, flooring, paint, artwork, lighting, everything that has been previously discussed in design meetings.
  4. Finally, the designer makes a few options depending on what was discussed in the client meeting (color options, style options, lighting options etc).

In the following images, one can see the original space or ‘before’ image, then the empty room, and then three options given to the client.  This particular client had artwork that she wanted to consider for the new look in her space, so the designer was able to add the artwork into the rendering and add pops of color to tie her art into the modernized space.

Notice the accent chairs and accessories changing from image to image.

Maybe you are a DIY type, or you have a great eye but just need to see if you can actually pull of your ideas. Or maybe you have contractors you like to work with but just need a good visual to show them to prevent mistakes.  Well, you’re in luck.  Jigsaw Design Group offers a renderings service that is completely unique to their firm.  After a phone consultation or face to face meeting, the designers can pull together visual rendering of your ideas so you can have a clear picture of how your design ideas will turn out.  During this process, the designer can help you fine tune your space to fit your budget and design style.  All that is need to get started are photos and measurements.

exterior-rendering

Jigsaw can help with renderings beyond interior design as well.  If you have a business or office space, the Jigsaw team also offers rendering services for commercial design.  The following images show a variety of options for one actual room at a business in CA.  This gave the client the opportunity to see how the space would function for customers when visiting their retail outlet, as well as how aesthetically pleasing that it would be.

despincery-2

The visual renderings service is not limited to interiors; plans can be visualized for decks, pools, landscaping and water features.  There is no limit, again, a photo and good measurements and all the work can be done virtually.  Jigsaw can even show the client rendered images of their space at night time.  This is a great tool for determining light features indoors or outdoors.   Take a gander at the exterior deck images in the following photos.  With visual renderings, you can play with all components from design to paint color, and in the end there will be no surprises.  Jigsaw has brought to masses what the trade has just begun to enjoy, visual imagery for solid design.

The Hipster Aesthetic-Differentiate Your Space

hipster dinig bold orange deer

A common style request we continue to receive, especially in the commercial side of our interior design business at Jigsaw Design Group, are clients looking for a ‘hipster’ style in their space.  While much of the trendy restaurants, coffee shops, works spaces and even homes are taking on this old is new aesthetic,  our designers at Jigsaw strive to differentiate that style with a certain finesse. We seek to meet the demand of the client’s usual wish list of rustic modern elements — reclaimed wood, brick, exposed ceilings, concrete floors, chalkboards, loft style doors, yet we aim to keep it fresh.  In this post we’ll share some ideas on how to keep your hipster pad from looking…well…mainstream.

hipster living dinig

We believe there are different faces of this hipster aesthetic, from the hardline rustic modern style with a sentimental side of focusing on the historical aspect of a space: for example maybe you pull down the drywall in an old building to find beautiful exposed brick walls that you can pair with rustic wood floors and black iron windows.  Then there is the preppy hipster that may have a more feminine approach, with more pops of color, bright white walls and splashes of prints mixed in like Ikat, Chinoiserie or even animal prints like in a cowhide rug.

hipster mod w natural and patchwork pillow

hipster with chiosiere

To keep your hipster pad from feeling bland especially in the typical neutral color palette, think of it as more of an eclectic vibe if you will…an industrial foundation with hints of glamazon with fun bar carts, oversized art, bold statement accent colors and then paired with touches of global ethnic rugs, or throw pillow.

hipster living black stairs

Our designers believe the hipster space depends on ones interpretation and can be flexible to personal style.  With the industrial ‘hipster’ style becoming the ‘safe’ look, change it up by adding some drama with fun items that speak to you, a chandelier, or candelabras.  For example the bedroom below where bed frame is made from recycled pallets that adds a unique touch, and then topped with a bright multicolored duvet and ethnic woven pillows.  The key is to stay true to your personal sensibility and have fun with this evolving youthful style.

Living Walls-The Indoor Vertical Garden

The indoor vertical garden can breath life into your home or office.  The lush ivy muse for this post is the world renowned Fred Segal in Los Angeles.

Fred Exterior

Fred LaX

When adding its’ latest location to the LAX airport, the company brought it’s iconic ivy exterior walls indoors. Visually stunning, this look makes such an impact and is being copied in stores like West Elm from So Cal to London.

West Elm Ivy

The vertical garden can be interpreted many different ways.  For example, moss is a great plant to work with considering it’s heartiness, rich color and coverage like the moss walls in the images below.  Moss looks great on walls, upstairs cases, on furniture, or piquing through cracks.

Living Moss Wall Staircase

So you live in the city in a fabulous loft apartment, but no roof top garden is included.  Bring your loft to life by bringing your garden indoors and make a statement in your space.  Start by filling your feature wall with low light indoor plants.  While the list of possibilities is vast, a few favorites worth mentioning are Sword Ferns and Dracaena for greens and Crotons and Peace Lilies for flowers and color.  These varietals are easy to grow with little maintenance.

Living Wall Interior

There are many interpretations for an indoor garden, and many can be done as a DIY project.  Exploring ideas like attaching boxes or pots to the wall for small spaces, or recycling pallets for a succulent garden on a large wall are all possibilities.  Want to do it yourself, but not work that hard?  Well, Urbino makes these cool magnetic garden pots to design how you want with very little work involved.

Tabletop Tips: The Coffee Table Conundrum

scuptural = floral=books

The constant quandary; how to decorate one’s tabletop.  Are you constantly rearranging and shuffling your coffee table decor to find the right balance?  For such a small surface area, this space is always the most perplexing.   In this post, the Jigsaw Designers are addressing the coffee table dilemma with some simple tips to help you find the right balance.

balance square table

Tip #1 Books, books and more books! This is an easy one. ‘Coffee table’ books are easy to come by, make great gifts and you’re bound to have a couple laying around somewhere. Use books to make a statement, express your personality, or simply be an accent color like for example the bold, Hot Pink book about Yves Saint Laurent.  Serves two purposes: 1. color, 2. shares a bit of nostalgia with those who love the fashion.

pink book

Stack books with a candle or small item on top, or several stacks around the table. If you have a two tier table, stack them top and bottom.   Stack them on a tray in the center or off to one side.

Above and below Books

Above and Below Scupltural +floral+ books

Tip #2 Add something natural like an orchid or flower arrangement. Succulents are hugely popular and there are even some faux plants that look rather real. We usually opt of the real thing, but sometimes a bouquet of silk peonies will do the trick.

Books on Tray

Tip #3 Add an element of surprise; an interesting sculpture, a classic obelisk or even a purple foot from Jonathan Adler. Whatever the case, make it quirky, and make it fun.

Tip #4 Don’t even think about letting that remote control be seen. Even if its a college bachelor pad, No Remotes visible please.

Keep it neat and tidy, sometimes less is more for your vignette and sometimes it just feels right to pile it one.
