Lemon Yellow-Summer’s Color

As summer approaches we naturally crave warm sunny colors like lemon yellow, which is arguably the happiest color in the spectrum.  This cheeky color was the hot color for spring runways during New York’s fashion week.  In this post we will explore fun ways to add lemon yellow to your space to catch this summer loving trend.

Yellow Chandelier

Yellow Hunter

This playful hue has big personality and blends well with most colors.  For wow factor, pop lemon yellow in a navy and white room.  The look is crisp and the yellow lightens the weight of the navy creating a cheery mood.

Yellow and Navy

The Jigsaw Designers love the classic look of lemon yellow with black and white that transcends time.  While the following spaces have a midcentury feel they still remain sharp and modern.  The cheerfulness of the yellow keeps the black and white from appearing too formal or serious.  Even the restaurant in the images below with all black interiors play off as happy and light with the yellow epoxy floors.

Being a very optimistic color this natural hue, inspired by lemons, is always associated with sunshine and happiness.  Yellow  is proven to stimulate the mind and is believed to be physically revitalizing.  The energy is obvious in the rooms below; even with the layers of bright colors the yellow is a blast of energy that brings balance to these ultra feminine spaces.

Yellow being the symbol of joy and peace in the Chinese Feng Shui theory, it can be used in any room of the home, even in the bathroom. We love these quirky tiles in the bathrooms below.  The patterns are interesting and the fun pop of yellow give these small rooms a lift.

Lighten you mood with sunny lemon yellow wether a little or lot, it will brighten your day.  While the list of bright yellow paint colors are great, our favorite lemon yellow is called Lemon Twist by Benjamin Moore.

Trends in bathrooms across every category have streamlined in style.  From traditional rustic to shabby chic, styling has become more minimal with cleaner lines.  Shelves opening up and an overall look of simplicity have been adapted to all styles.  The most consistent trend we’ve seen and captured for our clientele is the free standing tub.

Soaker tubs and claw foot tubs have pushed the standard built in tub out for something more luxurious.  It is not only more appealing visually, but it’s also more environmentally friendly.  Huge oversized jacuzzi tubs are, frankly, a waste of water.  And let’s face it, the kids think it’s a swimming pool and treat it as such.  If you are considering a bathroom renovation a free standing tub will be the single most important aesthetic update.

Free standing tubs can be found in many beautiful styles and colors to enhance the focal point of your en suite.  Try adding a standing wall mirror just behind the tub for a sexy intimate feeling, plus it adds size and depth to your bathroom.  This is an added bonus to a small bathroom giving it a feeling of more space.    We love this gold gilded mirror in the all white bathroom complete with molding and chandelier.  In another image, a mirror within a mirror is unique and adds what appears to be an abundance of space to the narrow room.

Staying true to the industrial modern craze, the Jigsaw Designers recently installed an elegant free standing tub in a small guest bath for a client.  Adding flare to the room the JDG designer used exposed brick walls to play up the industrial look and kept the sink petite and modern with minimal sconces and facets to not overwhelm the small bath.  This resulted in a showcase guest bath and the client was elated.

The claw foot tub and freestanding soaker set the stage to add interesting and personal back drops.  Iron windows and iron french doors in all their simple beauty create the perfect back drop for a relaxing bath to unwind in.

Preceding the backdrop and considering the tub, well, there are too many to choose from.  The silver chrome-plated soaker is a stunner in the images below.  Gold clawfoot tubs, black painted tubs, there are so many interpretations of this classic design that you can express yourself and let your bathroom focal point reflect your personality just like the rest of your home.

Grand Entrances-Pivot Doors

While peeking your interest,  you can’t help but have the urge to see what is just beyond the incredible pivot doors  which are so inviting in this image.  It’s as if you are drawn in so effortlessly by this minimalistic craft.  While the entrance of your home makes the first impression on your guests, why not take their breathe away with a grand entrance with custom pivot doors.

Pivot Door 12 Red

Pivot Door 11 Curved

Pivot doors have a clean and fresh approach to door design.  While typically minimalistic in style, these doors can easily assimilate into most home styles.  The pivot door swings on a set of mounted pins in the top and the bottom of a frame versus hinging off of a door jamb.  Creating not only state-of-the-art craftsmanship, but an attraction in your home or business like a work of art.

While creating drama with an impressive entrance, these doors are also ideal for areas leading out to a back yard or patio.  Especially when several are used connected together, the lines between indoor and outdoor are blurred.

Pivot doors can be made in glass, wood, and aluminum most commonly.  While there are several resources that can be found online, the Jigsaw Designers have found a few stand out leaders in the industry.

Western Window Systems specialize in extra wide glass doors.  Western will create a door panel so wide that most companies would insist on building two doors instead of one.  Their doors are glass and aluminum.

Western Window Sytstem photo

Dieffe based in Beverly Hills, CA will create custom built doors for their clients.  From wood to aluminum their doors are all one-of-a-kind built with a variety of finishes.  The finishes range from oak, lark, glass lacquered wood, teak and stainless steel.

These gorgeous door are not limited to the outdoors or front entrance.  They can be also be used indoor for unique entrances to luxurious rooms or hallways that access master or guest suites for added privacy, or to a home office or library.  Whatever the case these doors are unique and forward thinking.

Frank Lloyd Wright-The Pioneer of Rustic Modern Design

Being the father of organic architecture, FLW was far ahead of the curve on the eco-friendly home.  He used the earth in its very essence to create homes that were virtually seamless from outdoor to indoor. Coupled with that he laid an innovative design philosophy that pioneered what we now call rustic modern design.

Exterior

Modern Today Exterior

“We have no longer an outside and an inside as two separate things. Now the outside may come inside and the inside may and does go outside. They are of each other. Form and function thus become one in design and execution if the nature of materials and method and purpose are all in unison.”
― Frank Lloyd Wright

Living room windows and doors

Large Windows entrance

The most famous example of this beautiful simplicity is the astounding Fallingwater home in Mill Run, PA built in 1936. The project in its entirety was inspired, designed and integrated with nature. The original “rustic modern” home with its natural materials: Pottsville sandstone, flagstone, concrete and wood for built-ins and furniture; combined with the modern flair of steel which was used for windows, doors, sashes and metal shelving in a single color throughout, Cherokee red, his signature color.

Low Furniture bringing outdoors in

FLWright was the forerunner in many arenas from concept, design, and sustainability in which he continues to influence today.  The open concept home was not common in this era yet ever present in this informal retreat.  Furniture was built low in a style we consider modern to this day, all in natural colors to not obstruct the views of the serene outdoors.  A one of a kind hatch made of steel bound windows lead you from inside the home directly to the running water of the river below by stairway. In a few steps you are transported to the babbling stream that runs freely bringing energy and life to the home. Large almost seamless windows alongside mitered corner windows are used throughout this landmark home to bring the outdoor in and allow light to pour through.

Steps to water

Mr. Wright had a famous quote that is clearly depicted in the Fallingwaters home.  “No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill, belonging to it.   Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.”  The Fallingwaters property was built into the cliff side, hovering over the water as if suspended timelessly and effortlessly.  The home is anchored to the cliff by sandstone with terraces jutting out directly over the stream.  The interior walls are formed from sandstone and the flooring of flagstone floors to mimic the bedrock below the house in the stream.  Uncut boulders are left in the living room as a decorative relief instead of being removed and replaced with flooring.   A true innovation in design concept and functionality. The rustic influence of the native rock married with the modern lines of wood furniture and the steel presence bring the true nature of the rustic modern style to life.

“Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity”.  -FLW

While continually influenced by Japanese culture, philosophy and building, he was a passionate American striving to give us a gift of staying connected with the earth and with nature to remain pure and true to its preservation and the craft of design.

Custom Wine Cellars

Good-bye wet bar…HELLO wine cellar!  Custom designed wine cellars are growing in popularity for renovations and new builds.  For the amateur and the aficionado alike, custom wine cellars and home tasting rooms are at the top of the Jigsaw client’s want list.  The social aspect of wine tasting and collecting has grown immensely in recent years and homeowners are carving out space in their home and budget to add the perfect cellar.

A state of the art cellar with genius storage and lux design is both sexy and a great place for entertaining. Whether your taste tends to be sleek and modern or rustic charm, these social spaces are downright cool!  In the following image the cellar is simple in design with clean lines, and mixed materials of stainless steel and layered stone.  A look that screams style!

STainless Cellar

The sophisticated retreat in the image below is a converted basement.  The curved ceiling coupled with the curved glass adds a custom designed touch that really transforms this into a unique escape from the world.  Pendant lamps and soft neutrals make this cellar inviting and relaxing.

Basement wine room cellar curved ceilings

A little tight on space?  No problem, these imaginative wine storage rooms can be hidden under the stairs and displayed with glass walls and doors for saving space.  Or simply add a glass wine storage cabinet to an existing wall in the kitchen to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.  If you are working on a budget and have no extra room for a cellar, try setting up shelving in a. existing room to display wine like a wine library.  However the temperature will not be controlled like most cellars, it’s still a perfect look for the hipster in you.

The Jigsaw Designers love incorporating spaces together in unique ways like in the dining room below.  Why not make a wall in your dining room a glass walled cellar for your guests to “oh and ah” over your extensive collections of wine.  Wine is art, so why not display it as so.

wine wall as art in dining

Jigsaw Designers find that using an existing pantry to convert into a wine storage area is a great place to add wine storage or cellar.  With it being an existing space and wired with electricity the renovation will be much easier and budget friendly.  If it’s not large enough for a cellar, a small tasting room and intelligently designed storage area can be a great solution.

If your budget is carte blanch, then why not create a fantasy space or a work of art.  Surround your guest with walls of wine as you spiral down a staircase cut right into the floor.  Or create a mystical ambiance with unique lighting and storage that is more like a work of art, all while natural light cascades from the glass floors in the sitting room over-head.

The wine cellar is a fun and relaxing space and it should reflect your personality just like the rest of your house.  All you need are the functional pieces, then a little creativity and a lot of wine.

Kitchen and Bath Backsplash Trends

Backsplash trends for kitchen and bath are always evolving.   While your backsplash is likely something you’ll be living with for a while, the thought of searching for the perfect style and material may seem daunting.  However, your decision may be achieved rather easily if you follow these few guidelines on what is hot right now.

Kitchen Headliner

Bath Headliner

The biggest change in backsplash trends that the Jigsaw Design team is seeing is the height of the backsplash.  Tiles and slabs are soaring to new heights… sometimes even the ceiling.  This creates a work of art in your kitchen or bath for the perfect focal point.  The tiny kitchen in the images below appears much grander with the small square tiles all the way to ceiling, drawing the eye up.  The light monochromatic look also helps add size and focus to the room.  Secondly the blue glass backsplash in the kitchen with high ceilings serves two purposes, backsplash and art.  Clean, simple and homey, who would ever want to leave the kitchen?

Tiles to Ceiling

Glass Painted Backsplash

Grey Subway tiles

The Jigsaw Designers are seeing the Cararra Marble trend rise to near phenomenon levels.  Cararra has been resurrected for home interiors from its long history dating back as far as Ancient Rome.  The statue of David and even entire buildings like the Basilica of Massa and Harvard Medical School were constructed entirely of Cararra.  However on a much smaller scale than that, luxury bathrooms and kitchens are being adorned with Cararra or Cararra “like” marble on the backsplash, counter tops, table tops, bar tops as well as other areas of the home.  The look is gorgeous and luxurious and works well in many different styles as seen in the images below.  The rustic modern table pairs perfectly with the floor to ceiling marble backsplash, counters and shelves as well as the more traditional kitchen with farmhouse cup-pulls and French oven.

A trend to watch is colored grout which is being used to add more interest and color instead of using additional colored tile. For a more lighthearted or whimsical look such colors as orange or turquoise can be a fun idea.  If you are looking to add some dimension but more understated, try dark grey grout with white subway tiles for a vintage feel.

Over all the common thread in backsplash trends is a more neutral palette, more simplicity in design, tone on tone grout/tile combinations, timeless and cleaner looks.  Consider tiles that have been around for a long time and don’t really go out of style like subway tiles, Spanish tiles, Italian or French encaustic tiles.  If none of these genres tickle your fancy, then sticking with a neutral palette will seem fresher longer.

We spend so much of our time in the kitchen.  Regardless of how much space we have, guest always congregate in the kitchen.  In addition, your bathroom should be your tranquil escape from the hectic world.  You might as well love the kitchen and bath you have by indulging yourself in the look you really want.

The Updated Beach Bungalow

The term ‘beach bungalow’ has grown to mean much more than what it did in its humble beginnings.  A small cottage of rustic materials surrounded by a veranda may still describe some, but no matter the size the Updated Beach Bungalow is big on personality and far from humble.

muted palette living room big windows

Defining this shabby chic meets modern look is a difficult thing to put your finger on.  There are common threads that once pulled together just simply personify the chic beach house movement.  One trend across the board in this multifaceted style is large and sometimes floor to ceiling windows allowing the light to pour into the room.

shabby chic diiing

Another common denominator in this beach vibe is the emblematic white canvas.  Floor to ceiling white walls, white tiles and natural linens create a fresh atmosphere that is relaxed and comforting. A bold pop of color in this sea of white is crisp and adds interest to a room.  Even adding a black valance and throw is still light and bright as seen in the images below.

Exposed vaulted ceilings dressed in white are reminiscent of the classic beach cottage.  Whether your ceiling is finished in bead board or crown molding, the key to capturing the bungalow look is all in the color white.  From there you can mix in earthy rugs and accessories, or keep a muted color palette like the soft lilac bedroom below for an ultra-feminine look.

The basics are covered.  The rest is up to your style.  Whether you enjoy modern, Hollywood glam, or shabby chic, there is a place for your style in the updated beach bungalow.  The shabby chic slip cover can be mixed into a room with a more contemporary feeling as shown in the Malibu home in the images below.

Rustic modern, the style de jour, has even crept into beach bungalow category.  That natural element plays perfectly into this timeless style with reclaimed wood walls, vanities, tables and floors.  The natural wood tones add warmth to the bungalow look and a touch of masculinity.

Kitchen colors have brightened up in many style categories, especially in the bungalow style.  White cabinets with Carrera marble counter tops and back splashes are hot and on-trend.  At Jigsaw we are seeing a new direction with backsplashes in a single solid slab of material used instead of individual tiles.  If you are a tile fan as many are, then a rule to follow would be to stick to simple white tiles avoiding fussy patterns and multiple colors.  After you’ve muted your palette, then adding a fun stripe, nautical print, or solid pop of color to your chairs or curtains will liven up your kitchen.

The updated beach bungalow is very open-minded.  It doesn’t require a beach or any specific furniture or accessories.  It’s about a feeling coupled with cleaner lines, bright whites and your personality.

Men’s Suiting Trend

There is something about men’s suiting that feels timeless.  The fabrics, colors, patterns and texture may vary, but they never venture far from the root of what they are.  Menswear has become an inspiration for women’s fashion over the last year and this rich tailored look has now made its way into home interiors in a fresh new way.  Suiting inspired design in masculine colors like charcoal, navy and tan are not just for the quintessential bachelor pad anymore, it is a very warm and cozy look for cohabitation and even the whole family to enjoy.  In this post we will explore some ways to implement this look into your home in a small dose or even a complete overhaul.

pinstripe char and navy bedroom

navy bedroom

One of our favorite interpretations of the menswear styles is expressed through pinstripes.  Great pinstripe wallpaper can fit so nicely into a guest bathroom for just a touch of this tailored look, or down a long hall way for high impact.  We love this sitting area in the images below with the clean lines of the chrome furniture popping off the dark charcoal striped paper.  This creates an understated yet elegant look.

pinstripe paper

Want a quick pinstripe fix? Try recovering an old chair, stool or ottoman with Pinstripe fabric for instant style. Velvet is a great fabric for adding texture.  While it’s typically considered a feminine fabric it’s often found in men’s blazers and smoking jackets in darker colors.  We can’t get enough of this uber-cool navy pinstripe vintage chair with the brass framework.

Classic to the core, houndstooth is showing up with a whimsical new approach in interior design.  Oversized patterned pillows and throw add a punch to a monochromatic room to drive this exciting trend home.  Command your court in a houndstooth Louis XIV chair, or simply sit pretty in Danish modern chairs covered with a touch of feminine pink to break up the masculinity.

Texture plays the biggest role in the men’s suiting motif.  Flannel in trending in upholstery and bedding, and this timeless classic is soothing and cozy.  Pinstriped flannel or even soft grey are seen covering sofas, headboards and bedding like the images below.  Wool throws and pillows can add the perfect finishing touch to any room.  The Jigsaw Designers love draping a Hermes throw over a chair or sofa for a soft yet sophisticated touch.

If you like the men’s suiting look but prefer to lighten up your space then seersucker is a great way to incorporate the menswear look.  Seersucker couches, chairs and bedding are fresh, light and surprisingly versatile.  Using the fabric on the walls instead of wallpaper adds a unique texture and interest to the room.

The captivating menswear trend is an elegant look to bring into your home.  With accessories readily available this update can be done easily.  While being fresh and yet timeless your space will be cozy and tailored for the winter.

Luxury European Ranges

The Grand Palais 180 by LeCornue is the pièce de résistance of the kitchen.  The celebrity appliance among appliances…and celebrities as you will see in Gwyneth Paltrow’s kitchen below.

Gweneth Paltrow Oven

Whether you are a gourmet aficionado or not, the Grand Palais 180 is a culinary lover’s dream appliance and eye candy for the rest of us.  With a price tag starting at $46,000 this stove is quite a commitment but will last a lifetime.  Why do we love this gastronomic appliance so?  It features a stylish design in a class all it’s own, coupled with a vaulted electric oven, plus a six cooktop configuration.  Thanksgiving dinner will be ready in a flash, but if you love your oven to the tune of $46K, you’ll likely not want to rush and instead savor the opportunity to cook like a Michelin rated chef.

If functionality is most important to you and you’re looking for a completely custom designed French oven, then the Molteni Professional 145 Evolution line is your answer.  While only about 150 ranges are made per year at this time, this one can be designed for the individual with iPod docks, USB connection, pasta maker, you name it. This French beauty can be yours at the starting price of $ 100,000.  While still being made solely in Saint-Uze, France, the company Electrolux purchased the Molteni Company in the 1980’s and now controls manufacturing and distributorship.  Despite being bought by such a large company we haven’t seen a decline in price, but we are hopeful.

The Art Deco Revival

Art Deco took shape as the technology and machine age emerged after WWI.  It represented strength, glamour, and hope for a bright future for the world.  Likewise we embrace the rapidly changing and ever evolving world we live in, therefore it seems only fitting for this enduring style to take center stage again.

modern deco dining living room grey w tufted

We’ve seen glimpses of the Art Deco trend upon us with the infiltration of black, white, gold and blush into the marketplace.  In stepping away from the cold modern interiors of yesterday, we are seeing new shapes, monochromatic color schemes and more details.  Patterns are bolder, more geometric and circular, and full of movement with textures becoming more involved and luxurious.

Using a monochromatic color scheme and a few choice items such as patterned wallpaper, a great Deco chandelier or a scroll bench at the foot of the bed can bring your space up to trend in an instant.  A few great pieces like these are worth the splurge to add to your eclectic room.

Some of the hottest Parisian antique markets have seen an influx of Art Deco furnishings such as these gorgeous chrome chairs we found on our most recent scouting trip.  The markets are no bargain but the quality is amazing and you can get one of kind items by famous artists and designers like the lamp featured below in the photos.

After years of Modern and Hollywood Regency being the leading styles in the market, the Art Deco trend is a breath of fresh air.  The Jigsaw Designers love mixing styles and textures, so adding key elements of the Deco trend can work perfectly into the aforementioned styles.   A Deco rug in a Hollywood Regency room blends perfectly in this beautiful monochromatic bedroom below.
