Wallpaper can instantly transform your space in an exciting and unique way. Using bold colors, textures or patterns will add drama and dimension to the home or office. With so many options available, choosing the perfect paper can be a bit arduous, but by following a few basic tips we’ve provid-ed, and using our calculation tool below, your search can be simplified and even fun.

Where to start

Draw inspiration from your room like bringing an existing accent color to life, or selecting a dramatic pattern for a room where most of the upholstery is solid. Also, if you plan to cover four walls, selecting a flowing design or classic stripe would be a nice option. When planning to cover one accent wall, select a bold geometric or vibrant print to make a statement without overwhelming your room. Furthermore, wallpaper should match the mood of your room. For example, selecting a Damask for a feminine yet romantic bedroom, or a bold metallic for a glamorous dining room will make sense in those spaces. In most cases, there is no need to shy away from bold prints or dark colors even in small spaces, because wallpaper is meant to make a statement.

Wallpaper
Options

Due to growing popularity, wallpaper has moved from trend to standard in new home construction and remodels. Therefore with vast availability of styles, anyone can find a perfect match: flocked paper, foils, grasscloth, embossed, vinyl and even fabric wall-covering. Natural fiber papers like Jute and Grasscloth are trends that we see growing rapidly. Attributing to it’s recent rise to fame is the desire for something more natural in the marketplace, and this traditional product is being reimagined in beautiful colors, printed patterns and even applied studs. While most wallpaper is pre-pasted to make hanging a bit easier, grasscloth does not. Therefore, if you plan to apply the wallpaper yourself you will need to purchase and apply specialty wallpaper glue. Furthermore, priming your wall with a Shellac or any wallpaper primer will prep the walls for a beautiful final product.

Measuring and
Application

Each variety of wallpaper has a bit different temperament than the other, so it is vital to the success of your project to measure and order the appropriate amount of paper. Jigsaw also suggests using a professional contractor for application. This will take the stress off of you and avoid time consuming mistakes.

Jigsaw Design Group’s handy Wallpaper Calculator helps you easily dis-cover the number of rolls needed for your project, and get an approximate cost for labor when hiring a contractor. Wallpaper costs can be a bit tricky, so the Wallpaper Calculator can help eliminate unwanted surprises with your budget.

Important Note: Our calculator will show results in the number of SINGLE rolls you will need to order, as well as give you an estimate for labor per SINGLE roll. Most companies sell wallpaper packaged in what is called Double Rolls (two single rolls), therefore it is important to take note when you are ordering if the selected paper is Single Roll or Double Roll to pre-vent over/under ordering. A rule of thumb is Single Rolls typically are 21inches wide x 16.5 feet long (Approx. 28 square feet); likewise, a stand-ard Double Roll is 21 inches wide x 33 feet long (Approx. 56 square feet).

How to use
the Wallpaper
Calculator

Simply measure the space wall by wall and enter the measurement in the fields below. Next, just insert the number of rolls into the field for cost of labor, and you will quickly have an estimate for how much your wallpaper job will cost.

Keep in mind that other factors can affect your labor costs like paper re-moval, skimming the wall, or using a wall liner. These details will need to be discussed directly with your contractor. Please contact a Jigsaw Design Group team member for a firm estimate with our designers, or with any questions you may have for ordering or application.

While there are dozens of wallpaper vendors, below are some of our favor-ites. Once you have found your perfect paper and calculated the number of rolls you need, contact a Jigsaw Designer to place your order directly with us and receive discounts with our vendors:

  • The calculator tool measures in feet and inches. If you measured the space in inches only (excess of 12 inches), please calculate each wall to get the length in feet. To do so divide your total inches by 12 to get the number of feet and any remaining will be the number you will enter for inches. (For example if a room measures 150 inches wide divide by 12 and you will come up with 12 feet 6 inches).
  • When using an even number of Feet, a Zero will automatically populate in the Inches Field.
  • Please note that we allow for trimming and 10% extra for pattern matching, based on a standard room layout.
