Boutique Hotel Guest Bedroom

Despite the blazing heat wave, we can’t deny the fact that the holiday season is around the corner.  The holiday’s, as we all know, bring with them lots of parties and house guests.  Are you ready?  This season treat your guests to a boutique hotel experience in your own home.  In this post we will explore some basic tips and inspiring ideas for tricking out your guest room boutique style.

symetricl and patterned carpet

Five star style always starts with a comfortable and beautifully made bed.  The diagram below is a great example of deluxe accommodations bedding for your guest room.  It’s all about the layers-Euro shams, coverlets, duvets, throws and the highest thread count sheets that you can afford.

Properly make bed

Consider your favorite luxury resort as a launching pad for ideas when selecting your color palette.  All neutrals in creams and ivory, or a range of grays are always soothing and refreshing for your guests.  Stark white sheets never fade and feel crisp and brand new for each guest.  Compliment your palette with splashes of accents colors to match up with fresh flowers for a special touch.

neutrals guest room

If you have a large enough room, accommodate an entire family in your guest space.  Two double beds with high rising headboards feel very boutique-ish and add pizzazz to the room.  Whether queen or double, two canopy beds delight with the air of superior luxury for your likely to linger guests .

Using symmetrically placed bedside tables, lamps, pillows and accessories denote a signature boutique vibe.  Meanwhile, don’t forget to add something whimsical and quirky to give your guests something to puzzle upon.  A daring sculpture or piece of art, an artistically patterned rug or carpet, or indoor reading swing to lull those to sleep that are trying to shake the jet lag.

Last but not least, create a welcome basket of goodies for your guest.  Shampoo and conditioner, a candle, and bottled water at the very least.  Adding your special guests favorite candy or snack is also a nice touch.  Going the extra mile… a razor, q-tips and other bath essentials will make their stay even more perfect and they will finally have proof that you are the over achiever they’ve always loved.

Scandinavian Style

scanda living rocker bright

Scandinavian style in home décor is a merging trend that the Jigsaw designers are embracing with a passion.   The Scandinavian design movement began in the 1950’s and still stands on a few basic principles, functionality, simplicity and clean minimal lines.

scand bathtub slate wall

scand bath

A perfect example of the functionality of the Scandinavian style home is in this small office area.  The designer created an entire wall out of cork board for a unique look that adds texture and warmth while being perfectly functional for a home office.

Blurring the lines between the typical ‘modern’ style and ‘Scandinavian’ style are the textural aesthetics. Texture plays a big role in this trend with wools, fur and even crafty elements like woven items and carvings that add warmth to it’s minimalistic nature.

Another aspect of Scandinavian style is the use of natural materials.  Wood floor panels that are white or grey washed, or even sanded and clear coated for the most pure finish possible are used for flooring and furnishings; for example a kitchen table or headboard for a bed.

While these homes are charming and cozy the furnishings are minimal with a more modern flair.  Most often walls and linens are white yet some soft colors and cool greys are part of the palette as well.  The purposeful intent is to welcome light into the home during long dark days in the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark.  Materials with reflective surfaces for playing on light and bright pops of cheerful color as accents support this theory and keep this stream of style a constant in the Scandinavian culture.

While being white, bright and minimal the materials  are given dimension with lots of layers from fur skin rugs and crochets poufs mixed with wicker lamp shades are all fused together to create a space, often small, that you can feel relaxed and at home in.

Back to School-Study Spaces

Summer break has come and gone, so it’s time to hit the books.  The fresh start to a new school year is the perfect time to update or create an inspiring study space for your young scholar.  In this post we will explore some creative space ideas for dual study, small spaces and DIY projects.

industrial pipe shelving

Whether you have a large or small space to work with, some common threads for an inspiring study space your kids can relate to is to always include a swanky chair paired with fun accessories.  Kids and teens love color so popping their study room with a boldly colored Eames inspired chair  or adding some interesting texture with a funky Mongolian mohair swivel will add comfort with a modern flair to their homework time.

Color can be invigorating for the mind as we all naturally react to certain colors.   Include a splash of something bright to motivate their senses during long hours of study.  Brightly painted desk, curtains or desk accessories are always easy to find.

Our kids are as busy as we are when it comes to keeping a schedule.  From classes to extracurricular actives they lead hectic lives for so young.  Create a little ease in keeping up with that schedule with a chalkboard wall in their study space.  Great for brainstorming ideas and the occasions doodle for a brain break.  Chalk board paint can be found at most paint retailers including Home Depot, Lowes and even Michael’s.

So what do you do if you’ve got two…or even three kids…where can they all study?  For multiple study spaces in one common area, use one long tabletop to streamline the space. Define the separate spaces with personalized accessories and tailor them by color or print to match each child’s personality.  This can be a fun DYI project for the whole family that gets the kids involved in selecting colors and accessories that express who they are.

Homework stations

Sure all these ideas are great and who wouldn’t love to have an entire room to dedicate to homework.  Well, some of us don’t have that kind of space.  We’ve found some great small space ideas that fit snugly into a small corner or even a closet to keep that space out of site when not in use.  The key to a small space study area is keeping accessories to a minimum while still making it charming and functional.  Paint or wallpaper the inside of a closet or pantry and keep shelving neat for a professionally finished look.

Make an Impact with Monochromatic Art

Creating a serene and welcoming space to come home to, on every level, is what we are all trying to accomplish in our homes; with function and visual appeal as the primary goals when it comes to decor.  Any room and color scheme will instantly feel calming as well as make a statement when creating a ‘gallery’ of art in the monochromatic colors.

Using multiple pieces of art in a monochromatic color scheme with the same shape and size will bring balance and symmetry to your space.  See how perfectly balanced and inviting these rooms feel with these uniformly curated walls.

For statement making walls simply use an accent color that will pop, and then go big!  We love the simplistic yellow abstracts with sleek black frames to give these walls pizzaz in this featured dining room.

Sometimes we can all take ourselves too seriously.  Often times we just need to add a little humor and a bit of whimsy to our lives.  Try a bright fun tongue-in-cheek color like these bright kelly green frames wrapping up the stairs case.  The more the merrier!

Black and white is always bold and always in fashion.  Create a chic collage of mixed black and white images or artwork for any room.  A framed collection for the eat in kitchen always feels fresh as seen here. It can also be very relaxing in a completely grey room, mixed with touches of black and white.

Succulents-Why We Love Them

Easy to grow and hard to kill…Indoor or out, the succulent has made a name for itself in home decor and we are loving it.

Leading Succulent Photo

The succulent is a hearty plant known as the fat plant, and it retains water easily in arid climates or soil conditions.  These plants are hard to kill even if you have a brown thumb.  Since succulents live in extremes temperatures often times they end up lacking water.  This can lead to a change in color.  They tend to change to dull green color when there is a lack of sunlight.  When they are well nourished and even shocked by climate change they will begin to blush; this changes the color from green to red, pink, orange, dark purple or black.

One of the many perks in having succulents in your home is how easy they are to grow.  Succulents plants can blend into many different design styles indoors in home decor, or outdoor mixed in the yard or planters.  They blend perfectly into a modern home, industrial or even traditional style home.  For example a vertical succulent garden for the industrial modern abode…a space saving delight.

Outdoor succulent garden and planter ideas have no limits.  These little beauties can grow basically anywhere and in anything.  From broken pottery to old tree stumps the succulent brings new life to something forgotten, like this vintage bird cage.  A pretty touch to a patio or outdoor garden.

Creating vertical walls of succulents for a patio or large empty outdoor wall will bring visual interest to that location.  A simple frame can be filled with succulents and hung on the wall for a work of nature’s art.

With the vast variety of colors the succulents produce beautiful mosaics can be created in the  outdoor garden.  Whether horizontal or vertical the plants can be shaped along a pathway or climbing a retainer wall in patterns and shapes to add character and a serene feeling to your space.

Lining a walkway or patio in the more traditional way will always look clean and polished with succulents.  Being low maintenance and very water friendly the succulent makes the ideal plant for a busy family that is environmentally conscious.

Table Setting Trends for 2015

Nothing is more welcoming than a beautifully set table for a dinner party.  Whether it’s set for two or twenty-two, the table top is a chance to be playful and charming to excite your guest for what delights are to come.

Bold Jewel tones Emerald Table setting

When it comes to dinnerware, your collection may be a mixed bag.  Family heirlooms passed down from your grandmother, your everyday ware, and even some fun flea market finds.  One trend we love and believe it’s here to stay is layering your table setting with mix-matched style.  Mixing black and white for an elegant event, or red white and blue for a 4th of July barbecue; experiment with old and new, high end china with Ikea just express yourself!

The Jigsaw Designers like mixing metals in home decor as well as table settings.  Try mixing gold, rose gold and silver for your table top any time of year.  Adding in a square shape along with your round plates is interesting a will be a nice surprise for your guests.

Mixing jewel tones and bright colorful patterns will create a dramatic looks that’s feels a little bohemian. This look plays off as romantic and well traveled.

Another trend we love is the natural earthy look.  This can be achieved by mixing greenery with simple tea lights, copper mugs and flatware or wooden chargers.  Take this look a step further with a zebra skin and tusks for an escape into the wild as seen in the image below.

Summer is here and we all crave the beach this time of year.  Bringing the beach into your dining room for a California coastal girls lunch sets the tone for an afternoon of fun.  Neutral colors reminiscent of the sea, with touches of blue, sea shells, candles and even sea shell chargers add the finishing touches to this relaxing experience.

Dainty Touches-Scallop Edges Take the Lead

This spring’s scallop edging is nothing short of pretty.  While loving our crisp clean lines here at Jigsaw, sometimes a girl just needs a little flair or extra feminine touch.  This girlie and yet streamline sitting room is clearly ladylike in blush and black, but the scallop boarder along the curtain’s edge adds cache to the overall look of the room.

Scallop Curtain

If your not sure how to introduce the look into your space but you know you want it, try sheets or even a full bedding set with flirty scallop edges.  Kate Spade offers bedding that is stylish for the more modern girl.  Featured here is the Piedmont Park Duvet Cover by Kate Spade New York.  Sheets trimmed in scalloped edges look like layers of lace for the ultimate feminine touch yet still tailored and crisp.

Want the scallop look to wow?  The striking look of wallpaper for a feature wall is a grand idea.  The Jigsaw Designers love wallpaper for adding drama to a space.  The black and white scallop wallpaper below with black lacquer dresser gives a striking art deco feel that we can’t help but feel inspired by.

Scallop wall paper and dresser

Furniture with scalloped edges create lines interesting for the eye to follow.  While scalloped furniture can play well in most settings we love a scallop edge table to play up a Hollywood Regency look with vintage French chairs, or a modern look with banquet seating.  A scallop couch can go shabby chic or Moroccan depending on the accessories and direction of the room.

Tribal Chic

Global looks were rampant on the fashion runways this spring from Chanel to Valentino.  These fashion powerhouses got behind this theme that speaks volumes of our love for globe trekking and embracing our world and it’s multitude of cultures.  Prints and textures steeped in culture from Africa, India, Turkey and  Peru had the largest influence on these tribal looks that stole our hearts.  With fashion and home interiors being naturally intertwined; we see the strong influence of these ethnic trends popping up in furniture, rugs and fabrics for the home.

Chanel Tribal Valentino chandelier and tribal

The tribal chic trend can be achieved in simply adding a rug and a few throw pillows for a hint of the native look to satisfy the free-spirited wanderlust in you.   We love the Killim rug in this minimalist living room, and the throw over the Scandinavian chair to mix mid-century with ethnic influences.

Tribal Rug

Adorning a sofa or bench with throw pillows in Aztec or Turkish prints build rich layers of color and design.   The Jigsaw Design Team like adding elements of surprise to a room like this elegant French living space with molding, chandelier, and white sofas.  A touch of ethnic in the pillows and throw add a bit of warmth and a timeless appeal to the room.

Ikat prints for curtains, pillows and even furniture aren’t just for the flower-child anymore.   Even in a refined setting, the ikat print can make itself easily at home.  As seen in the images below the ikat printed curtains are bold, yet subtle in color so the eye is drawn to the interest in the pattern but not distracting from the rest of the room.

The exotic gypsy bedroom is nothing less than sexy and inviting.  Layering is the key in this ethnic bedroom style; accent pillows and duvets finished off with a kilim rug and your tribal bedroom will be intoxicating.   Even a modern or mid-century bedroom can attain this global vibe while still making sense.  An all-white room with modern fixture has a fresh updated approach with the spirit of tribal in this gorgeous room in the following image.
