Designer Crush-Timothy Oulton

Our design crush this month is British furniture designer Timothy Oulton. Known for creating furniture with a modern twist on classic and antique pieces that are a delicious feast for the eyes.

Oulton can spin a classic Chesterfield sofa like no other. His take like the Bensington, as seen above, is from his University of Oxford collection. Meanwhile, no man cave will be edgier or more inviting than with the Union Jack Chesterfield like the one featured in the ‘club within a club’ at LA Sports Club.

Oulton’s immersion in his father’s antique business is evident in his craft where vintage + men’s club vibe + modern + glam = fresh innovative design. From drums to searchlights these seemingly average items become spectacular under his spell.

With 37 stores now globally, Oulton is enjoying great success. In recent years, he brought to the masses a greater awareness of his collection through the collaboration with Restoration Hardware. While his collection with Restoration Hardware is vast one can find Oulton’s imprint across many designs from the Aviator to the Clouds.

The Jigsaw Design team members collectively believe we will all have a design crush on Mr. Oulton for quite some time.

Bar Cart Crazy

Have a spot that needs something, but can’t put your finger on it? Then spruce up your space with a festive bar cart. In this post we’ll explore some different ideas, styles and tips for adding a little hipster flair to your space with a fun bar cart.

Finding the right bar cart for your space may sound like a simple task, but there are a multitude of choices to be had. From a thrift store find for a DIY project, or the ultimate authentic 1930s french version sold by The Golden Triangle for a cool $5,300! Whatever the case, hopefully by the end of this post you’ll decide which type tickles your fancy.

We could infinitely discuss the different carts in the marketplace, but for time’s sake we’ll highlight a few styles that the Jigsaw team like to use for added interest in a space.

For starters, we like using a more masculine style in a room that evokes a feeling of academia like a study or library. In this instance, you can’t beat the round metal bar from Restoration Hardware that was inspired by 1920S German light bulb voltage tester. While it is uber cool, it may not fit into some home styles. Other options on the industrial modern side of things, consider a minimalistic metal cart for a rustic or loft style space.

For a more ladylike vibe, a Chippendale or rattan cart may be the answer. Equally, a classic metal and glass cart if fabulous when tricked out with beautiful bottles and fun pop art.

Once you’ve selected your cart, simply dress it in your style with a little whimsy of course! Chic glasses and bar ware plus some quirky objects for conversation starters are always a plus.

The modernist may struggle with this item that could seemingly end up as clutter, but a little lucite number could be the remedy for this type of OCD. Meticulously lined bottles and no fuss trinkets will result in a perfectly curated place to pamper your guests with your cocktail d’jour.

Make an Impact with Monochromatic Art

Creating a serene and welcoming space to come home to, on every level, is what we are all trying to accomplish in our homes; with function and visual appeal as the primary goals when it comes to decor. Any room and color scheme will instantly feel calming as well as make a statement when creating a ‘gallery’ of art in the monochromatic colors.

Using multiple pieces of art in a monochromatic color scheme with the same shape and size will bring balance and symmetry to your space. See how perfectly balanced and inviting these rooms feel with these uniformly curated walls.

For statement making walls simply use an accent color that will pop, and then go big! We love the simplistic yellow abstracts with sleek black frames to give these walls pizzaz in this featured dining room.

Sometimes we can all take ourselves too seriously. Often times we just need to add a little humor and a bit of whimsy to our lives. Try a bright fun tongue-in-cheek color like these bright kelly green frames wrapping up the stairs case. The more the merrier!

What’s Hot in Hardware Part 2-Weathered Hardware

With the serge of the industrial modern home as well as the farmhouse, we see strong growth in weathered patinas in hardware. From kitchen and bath to door knobs and knockers in bronze, brass and copper alike are being installed in weathered patinas to support these styles that are going strong.

Vintage styles and shapes play well into the weathered hardware aesthetic. Restoration Hardware are experts at rebirthing antique shapes and making them fresh with a modern flair. We love the mix of reclaimed wood and bronze faucets in their Logan Washstand. Pair it with the bronze filament sconce and your bathroom is instantly updated with this timeless weathered look.

Following the vintage vibe is the classic schoolhouse fixture by Rejuvenation. Faux Antlers

Animal antlers are not just for hunting lodges anymore. They are also for those who seek a little whimsy in their décor. The longevity of this trend in displaying faux and real animal horns and antlers is definitely one that’s up for debate. Nonetheless, these interesting little oddities are simply…cool. Antlers and horns can be found in a variety of styles and materials; solid white ceramic, printed paper mache’, chrome and of course the real thing.

The Jigsaw Designers love the look of horns and antlers mixed into a modern space with clean lines. Get this look by placing a single pair of antlers or several pair on a solid brightly painted wall for a fun and modern look. The antlers in any style can bring an element of surprise to almost any room. We also recommend using a statement color antler with exaggerated features as a focal point in a living or dining room, possibly above the fire place for a quirky conversation piece.
