Luxury Vinyl Tile

Until recently the thought of vinyl flooring could instantly transport you back to your childhood, standing in your grandmother’s kitchen with thoughts of linoleum dancing in your head.  Contrary to this fading memory is a hot new product we are seeing more and more called Luxury Vinyl Tile.

Known as LVT in the industry this severely cool, flexible and budget friendly flooring has become the fastest growing product in its market segment.  While imitating hardwood floors, natural stone and ceramic tile, this product is extremely durable; ideal for a high traffic area like bathrooms, kitchens, and even restaurants.

Available in a variety of ranges from modern to rustic, the embossing and graining on LVT are extremely realistic with 3D effects.  These tiles can also be grouted to look like real stone or ceramic tiles for added effect.  ‘Slate’ vinyl floors give a rustic modern feel in the images below, while the black and white colored chevron adds whimsy and flare to the living area of this bright home.

Hardwood floors are imitated with the true character of wood with graining, depth of color and embossed texture.  The LVT hardwoods are installed in planks like real hardwoods for a natural look.  Vinyl hardwoods, being water resistant, are an ideal way to have the hardwood floor appearance in your bath without the constant fear of water damage.  Beautiful white washed vinyl wood floors in a bathroom are the perfect touch for a warm feel after a long relaxing bath, or a multiple color chevron for a bold fashion forward look in a small space.

Why do we love LVT at Jigsaw? Durability, comfort and style!  The LVT flooring is a bit less permanent way to add a trend you love in color or style without having to live with it for 20 years; with less permanent floating LVT floors you can get an updated look quickly and quite economically.  With industry standards in safety and flame retardant it is easy to see why this product is soaring to the top of consumers want lists.

Agate and Geodes-Natural Glamour

For centuries minerals, crystals and stones have been believed to contain mysterious powers of healing, health, and prosperity.  Black Agate for example is believed to have the power of protection from stress, nightmares, and discernment along with the added perks of prosperity and coincidentally invigorates an appreciation of nature. Whether you are a believer in these mystical powers or not, we can all admit they are of magnificent beauty and a true gift of nature that we can truly appreciate

Agate and Geodes are two beautiful mineral samples to display and come in a variety of colors and forms.  Agate is an ornamental stone consisting of a hard variety of chalcedony and appears banded or striped.  Instantly add this trend with drink coaster in a rainbow of colors as seen below from easy to find resources like Jonathan Adler, or West elm.  Or this gorgeous trivet from Calypso will add a unique flare to your dinner table.

For a completely fresh take on incorporating the natural mineral look into you space, the Jigsaw Design team suggests adding a large close up image as a wall covering or, more permanently,  having a back-light installed under a layer of the mineral of your choice.  This look has extreme wow factor and results in an exclusive designer style tailored just for you.

Geodes are another mineral used creatively to add a natural element to your décor.  Geodes have a small cavity inside of a rock that is lined with crystal or mineral matter.   Because of the geodes shape the rock gives a more sculpture feel to this natural crystal.  Geodes can stand alone on a table, or be displayed in cases like priceless works of art. The Jigsaw Designers love the use of geodes as functional décor like the black lamp in the images below.

Step Three:

Apply the mixture to the artwork that is dry to the touch-pour mixture onto center of artwork and using an epoxy spreader, spread mixture evenly to the edges allowing the mixture to run off the sides.

Step Four:

Once resin has spilled over the sides, smooth evenly with a sponge brush.

Step Five:

Allow to dry overnight.  Your custom work of art is complete.

Frank Lloyd Wright-The Pioneer of Rustic Modern Design

Being the father of organic architecture, FLW was far ahead of the curve on the eco-friendly home.  He used the earth in its very essence to create homes that were virtually seamless from outdoor to indoor. Coupled with that he laid an innovative design philosophy that pioneered what we now call rustic modern design.

Exterior

Modern Today Exterior

“We have no longer an outside and an inside as two separate things. Now the outside may come inside and the inside may and does go outside. They are of each other. Form and function thus become one in design and execution if the nature of materials and method and purpose are all in unison.”
― Frank Lloyd Wright

Living room windows and doors

Large Windows entrance

The most famous example of this beautiful simplicity is the astounding Fallingwater home in Mill Run, PA built in 1936. The project in its entirety was inspired, designed and integrated with nature. The original “rustic modern” home with its natural materials: Pottsville sandstone, flagstone, concrete and wood for built-ins and furniture; combined with the modern flair of steel which was used for windows, doors, sashes and metal shelving in a single color throughout, Cherokee red, his signature color.

Low Furniture bringing outdoors in

FLWright was the forerunner in many arenas from concept, design, and sustainability in which he continues to influence today.  The open concept home was not common in this era yet ever present in this informal retreat.  Furniture was built low in a style we consider modern to this day, all in natural colors to not obstruct the views of the serene outdoors.  A one of a kind hatch made of steel bound windows lead you from inside the home directly to the running water of the river below by stairway. In a few steps you are transported to the babbling stream that runs freely bringing energy and life to the home. Large almost seamless windows alongside mitered corner windows are used throughout this landmark home to bring the outdoor in and allow light to pour through.

Steps to water

Mr. Wright had a famous quote that is clearly depicted in the Fallingwaters home.  “No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill, belonging to it.   Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.”  The Fallingwaters property was built into the cliff side, hovering over the water as if suspended timelessly and effortlessly.  The home is anchored to the cliff by sandstone with terraces jutting out directly over the stream.  The interior walls are formed from sandstone and the flooring of flagstone floors to mimic the bedrock below the house in the stream.  Uncut boulders are left in the living room as a decorative relief instead of being removed and replaced with flooring.   A true innovation in design concept and functionality. The rustic influence of the native rock married with the modern lines of wood furniture and the steel presence bring the true nature of the rustic modern style to life.

“Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity”.  -FLW

While continually influenced by Japanese culture, philosophy and building, he was a passionate American striving to give us a gift of staying connected with the earth and with nature to remain pure and true to its preservation and the craft of design.

Hot Trend-Chunky Knit Decor

Cozy up in the ultra-cool trend of chunky knit home décor.  These fun whimsical creations are ‘haute’ right now and the timing couldn’t be better.  Winter is here so why not bring the warmth of the cable knit sweater into your home.  Roche Bobois created this incredible cable knit rug and pouf below for added warmth to their typically modern décor.

When updating with kitschy knits, don’t be afraid to mix textures.  The Jigsaw Designers encourage combining textures like the textured cable rug and the grass cloth wallpaper as seen here.

At Jigsaw, the designers thrive on finding (and setting) new trends in unexpected ways.  Cable knit pendant lamps are a perfect example of that.  Adding this touch of texture to any space will create dimension and display a fresh focal point.

Chunky knits are rich in character and look beautiful layered in any home especially the modern or rustic modern home.  Play up a cozy bedroom with chunky knit throw pillows and even a chunky knit comforter. ..though it may be hard to get out of bed on a cold morning.

Cable knits are soft and natural, so if you’re style is more contemporary and you aren’t quite ready to go there, try adding a cable knit pouf for fun or pop of color and texture, or a simple ceramic vase for a hint of the trend with a modern twist.  They’re a fun and more transitory way to try the trend.

Lovely Lamp Lighting

Nothing sets the mood in a room like lighting.  General lighting and lamps are essential for any room and can shift the atmosphere in an instant.

suspension brick wall oversized shade arc living

There are so many lighting options to consider and while general lighting is necessary for living, it should also be fashionable.  In this post, we will focus on lamp lighting that serve two purposes, task and décor.  Lamp options from floor to table and wall sconces all come in a variety of ranges; each will be determined by size and style of the room.  Keeping lamps to scale with the room is important.  For example, adding a tiny lamp in a grand living room will be inordinate.  Therefore, as you consider shape and style, you must also consider size.

Floor lamps work well placed in a corner to fill dark spots, or for a streamline look pair them on either side of a bed or credenza.  Stick to cleaner lines to not overpower other décor especially in a more modern or more contemporary home.

After determining the purpose of the lamp whether for reading or simply eye candy, it’s time to select the accessories.   Lamp shades need to reflect the personality of the room just as well as compliment the base of the lamp.  Whether your space is modern, traditional or rustic there are some simple guidelines to help make you shade selection easier.  For a fluid look, imitate the shape of the lamp with the shape of the shade.  For example, Jonathan Adler’s Capri bottle lamp, the lines are clean and simple making this lamp perfectly balanced.  Next, the size of the shade should be about half to three quarters the size of the base.  Have fun with the shade as it can add substantial personality to the room.  Lastly, the bulb shape and brightness affects the overall look and feel of the lamp.  Filament bulbs are still very popular and continue to on trend.  These bulbs add interest to the lamp especially in pendant and sconce lighting.  This industrial modern meets vintage look can find its place in most spaces.

Incorporating dimmers to lamps in living and bedrooms add flexibility to the look.  Dim lighting makes the room sexier, and this tool is ideal to help you create the perfect ambiance within your space and still have the option of necessary task lighting. Once you’ve taken these steps it’s time for placement.  For maximum impact try hanging several lamps in a cluster like shown in the images below.  The DWR pendent lamps with soft bulbs set on a dimmer make this cluster a work of art.

Accent lighting can be the most comforting and even sexy accessory in your home.  While needing light is necessary for everyday tasks, so it also is for setting the right frame of mind while relaxing after a long day. Get cozy with the right lighting today.

Framed Vintage Scarves

Silk scarves are works of art, so why not display them as such?   Framing your favorite vintage scarf can be the perfect art piece for your space, and put those scarves that are hidden away to good use.  Try framing a Hermes or Emilio Pucci for a fresh look, or even random scarves from vintage or thrift stores if you’re not quite ready to part with your Hermes.  Another fun option is to frame vintage fabric and this can be a more budget friendly option.

Pucci Pink Blue and Red

Bright beautiful scarves can be framed professionally, which is very costly, or you can try this relatively easy DYI.  In this post we will take you step by step through the framing process.

Purple monkey

There are 4 Steps to frame a scarf:

  1. Find a frame that compliments your scarf and matches your décor. Scarves typically don’t fit standard frames so your best bet is to shop online for wholesale custom frames. This will ensure the perfect size for your scarf and you can shop within your budget.
  2. Flatten the scarf and carefully iron all the wrinkles. If you have a steamer, this will yield better results.
  3. Glue the scarf to the frame. The Jigsaw Designers recommend using spray glue on the cardboard or foam core to attach, and then stretch out all the wrinkles.  Other options are to use pins or tape by wrapping the scarf around the backside of the foam core.
  4. Use a plexi or glass lens cover to protect the fabric from dirt and moister.

Viola!  Time to display your brilliant work of art!  While these steps are the quickest and easiest methods, we do recommend practicing with the glue on a piece of silk or fabric for your first time.  If you have a lot of free time on your hands, then another option is during step 3, to actually sew your scarf to a piece of cotton or linen first and then glue that piece to the cardboard backing.  This keeps the scarf safe for future use if you eventually would like to wear it again.

Framed scarves are color confident and will add flavor to any room.  This DYI project is fun and can be completed quickly and easily.  If you are feeling really crafty try making scarf pillows to add to your vintage look.  Enjoy the project and we’d love to hear about your scarf framing results.

Holiday Season Tile Quick Fix-Painting Your Tile

As the holidays arrive at lightning speed, so do our friends and relatives.  Sometime you want a quick update here and there especially in your kitchen or bathrooms where your guests will surely frequent.  Painting dated tile is a fast way to update the look of a room without having to bring in a crew for 3 days to demolition, and install.  You do have better things to do like shopping and cooking right?  In this blog we will take you through the steps of this quick update and show you some recent results from a client.

Before Photo:

After Photo:

The first step is to decide if you want to attempt a DYI project or hire a professional painter.  Unless you are a very confident painter we suggest hiring a painter.  The job can be done in one day which won’t tie you down to the house or cost you a small fortune.

The next step is to prep the tile by sanding with 100 Grit Sandpaper lightly after a thorough cleaning.  After sanding, the tile will need to be wiped with a damp cloth and dried.

There are then a few choices to make for the paint and primer.  If you are painting with color, the Jigsaw Designers suggest using high quality paint like Benjamin Moore Advanced Waterbase Paint.  The finish is smooth and glossy and can be applied with a brush or roller once the tile has been primed.  Be sure to use a primer that is suggested for tile or porcelain surfaces.  Go Prime Primer or Zinsser are both good quality ‘glossy surface’ primers for this type of job and can be applied with a roller.  Most primers should dry for about 3 hours.  After the primer has dried, then a second sanding is best with 220 grade grit.  Followed by a damp cloth to pick up any remaining dust.

Zinsser

Now that your tile is sanded and primed, the last step before painting is to tape and paper everything in the area.  Cabinets, counters, appliances, facets all need to be thoroughly covered by brown paper and low tack tape.

paper 2

All white homes and kitchens are all the rage these days and if you find yourself wanting to paint your tile white another options would be to use white epoxy made for porcelain sinks, tubs, and tile.  The Jigsaw Designers recently did a kitchen update for a client that wanted to paint the existing tile with Homax Tub & Sink Refinishing Kit.  The epoxy comes in a spray so there is no risk of brush strokes, and this eliminates the step of primer.  The kit costs about $45 and you will likely need at least a few kits for perfect coverage.  The kitchen in the images below took 4 coats.  The full cure is about 96 hours so plan to eat take out for a few days if you are doing the kitchen.

kit

kitchen corner after

While a tile redo may be the ideal answer, painting your tile can be a satisfying way fill in the gap until you have more time.  If your tile is still in good condition like this kitchen was, then painting is good solution to make that color change you desire.  The results in this update where fantastic and will give the client a great update to get through the busy holidays.

Counting Sheep-Mongolian Sheepskin Trend

Recently we have been counting sheep.  Sheepskin that is…Mongolian Sheepskin which is the haute trend popping up everywhere fashionable lately.  Think retro glam meets 60’s nostalgia.  From home goods to apparel this look is fun and fresh, and can be adapted to a variety of styles and spaces

The Jigsaw Designers love this trend to add texture and a bit of whimsy to an otherwise stale space.  In the images below the grey monochromatic rooms are beautiful, however the grey sheepskin throw adds that extra something special to maximize the look of the room with the texture from the throw.  These two rooms have a more traditional look to them, so the sheepskin helps create a slight retro vibe to give these rooms more personality.

For an element of surprise, consider adding a sheepskin bench to your dining area.  It’s so soft your guests are sure to linger after dinner.

Benches, pillows and throws are always the easiest update.  They are typically affordable and can be replaced as styles change.  Some on the other hand are more of a commitment due to the expense, but they are worth it.  We love this sheep and Lucite stool by Jonathan Adler; however it will set you back about $1300.  If you want to splurge, then the Moss Studio gold metal bench at $2200 is vintage cool at its best.

If you are looking for a more “disposable” price point, then Ikea and Costco have a cute sheepskin throw that is very affordable.  Anthropology also offers a Mongolian sheepskin chair and ottoman that are well crafted for a reasonable price.

Custom Wine Cellars

Good-bye wet bar…HELLO wine cellar!  Custom designed wine cellars are growing in popularity for renovations and new builds.  For the amateur and the aficionado alike, custom wine cellars and home tasting rooms are at the top of the Jigsaw client’s want list.  The social aspect of wine tasting and collecting has grown immensely in recent years and homeowners are carving out space in their home and budget to add the perfect cellar.

A state of the art cellar with genius storage and lux design is both sexy and a great place for entertaining. Whether your taste tends to be sleek and modern or rustic charm, these social spaces are downright cool!  In the following image the cellar is simple in design with clean lines, and mixed materials of stainless steel and layered stone.  A look that screams style!

The sophisticated retreat in the image below is a converted basement.  The curved ceiling coupled with the curved glass adds a custom designed touch that really transforms this into a unique escape from the world.  Pendant lamps and soft neutrals make this cellar inviting and relaxing.

A little tight on space?  No problem, these imaginative wine storage rooms can be hidden under the stairs and displayed with glass walls and doors for saving space.  Or simply add a glass wine storage cabinet to an existing wall in the kitchen to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.  If you are working on a budget and have no extra room for a cellar, try setting up shelving in a. existing room to display wine like a wine library.  However the temperature will not be controlled like most cellars, it’s still a perfect look for the hipster in you.

The Jigsaw Designers love incorporating spaces together in unique ways like in the dining room below.  Why not make a wall in your dining room a glass walled cellar for your guests to “oh and ah” over your extensive collections of wine.  Wine is art, so why not display it as so.

wine wall as art in dining

Jigsaw Designers find that using an existing pantry to convert into a wine storage area is a great place to add wine storage or cellar.  With it being an existing space and wired with electricity the renovation will be much easier and budget friendly.  If it’s not large enough for a cellar, a small tasting room and intelligently designed storage area can be a great solution.

If your budget is carte blanch, then why not create a fantasy space or a work of art.  Surround your guest with walls of wine as you spiral down a staircase cut right into the floor.  Or create a mystical ambiance with unique lighting and storage that is more like a work of art, all while natural light cascades from the glass floors in the sitting room over-head.
