What’s Hot in Hardware Part 2-Weathered Hardware

With the serge of the industrial modern home as well as the farmhouse, we see strong growth in weathered patinas in hardware.  From kitchen and bath to door knobs and knockers in bronze, brass and copper alike are being installed in weathered patinas to support these styles that are going strong.

Vintage styles and shapes play well into the weathered hardware aesthetic.  Restoration Hardware are experts at rebirthing antique shapes and making them fresh with a modern flair. We love the mix of reclaimed wood and bronze faucets in their Logan Washstand. Pair it with the bronze filament sconce and your bathroom is instantly updated with this timeless weathered look.

Following the vintage vibe is the classic schoolhouse fixture by Rejuvenation. The schoolhouse style flourished from the 1920’s to the 1950’s at it’s peak, found not only in schools, but homes and commercial settings.  While this style of lamp has many translations, Rejuvenation has done a great job of interpreting this look and making it reasonably priced.

While the clawfoot tub has made a big comeback in recent years, adding the weathered bronze feet brings a unique touch to detail your bath to the nines.

The front door of your home or office is the first impression and should directly reflect the overall interior style of your space.  Therefore when adding weathered hardware throughout the interiors, updating the front door hardware is a must.  Rocky Mountain Hardware and Ashley Norton featured below offer a large selection of front door hardware in weathered patinas, all in beautiful shapes and meticulously crafted.

Updating Your Foyer

What does your entry way say about your style?  Crowded with tchotchkes ?  Overrun with shoes?  In this post we will show you quick ways to streamline your foyer and give it a little kick while keeping it functional.

Entry Way Small Space White ghost

We all dream of having the grand entrance fit for a king, but that’s not always realistic.  Small entries are typical for city dweller and beach lovers alike.  So how do you make an impact in a compact space?  Rule #1, get rid of the table with knickknacks galore.  Simplify with a few balanced accessories, a mirror or art work for the wall, and touch of storage or stool for removing shoes.

Entryway Small Space ethnic

You’ve removed the clutter, now add the pop.  No matter the scale being grand or petit, the Jigsaw team are big fans of wall paper.  It’s serves many purposes; style, texture and personality!  Adding wallpaper creates a bit of whimsy to the space and can serve as artwork, leaving the need for only a few finishing touches.

For an element of surprise, decorating the ceiling creates instant wow factor.  We love this gold leaf ceiling in the entrance of this small apartment.  The gold gives a regal appearance while remaining simple and understated.

Wallpaper is not only for the walls.  The ceiling space in an entryway is usually somewhat separate from the rest of the home, so a little wall paper goes a long way.  The herringbone paper in the image below is from target and is removable.  If you are tired of it in a year, simply remove it!

Don’t be afraid of the dark either; dark charcoal or black walls make a statement in an entryway creating an artistic mood and setting the tone for the remainder of your  trendsetting pad.

The options are endless for the standout entryway.  While following a few simple rules of keeping it minimal and meticulous, yet filled with personality, your entrance is sure to be welcoming.

Lovely Lamp Lighting

Nothing sets the mood in a room like lighting.  General lighting and lamps are essential for any room and can shift the atmosphere in an instant.

There are so many lighting options to consider and while general lighting is necessary for living, it should also be fashionable.  In this post, we will focus on lamp lighting that serve two purposes, task and décor.  Lamp options from floor to table and wall sconces all come in a variety of ranges; each will be determined by size and style of the room.  Keeping lamps to scale with the room is important.  For example, adding a tiny lamp in a grand living room will be inordinate.  Therefore, as you consider shape and style, you must also consider size.

Floor lamps work well placed in a corner to fill dark spots, or for a streamline look pair them on either side of a bed or credenza.  Stick to cleaner lines to not overpower other décor especially in a more modern or more contemporary home.

After determining the purpose of the lamp whether for reading or simply eye candy, it’s time to select the accessories.   Lamp shades need to reflect the personality of the room just as well as compliment the base of the lamp.  Whether your space is modern, traditional or rustic there are some simple guidelines to help make you shade selection easier.  For a fluid look, imitate the shape of the lamp with the shape of the shade.  For example, Jonathan Adler’s Capri bottle lamp, the lines are clean and simple making this lamp perfectly balanced.  Next, the size of the shade should be about half to three quarters the size of the base.  Have fun with the shade as it can add substantial personality to the room.  Lastly, the bulb shape and brightness affects the overall look and feel of the lamp.  Filament bulbs are still very popular and continue to on trend.  These bulbs add interest to the lamp especially in pendant and sconce lighting.  This industrial modern meets vintage look can find its place in most spaces.

Incorporating dimmers to lamps in living and bedrooms add flexibility to the look.  Dim lighting makes the room sexier, and this tool is ideal to help you create the perfect ambiance within your space and still have the option of necessary task lighting. Once you’ve taken these steps it’s time for placement.  For maximum impact try hanging several lamps in a cluster like shown in the images below.  The DWR pendent lamps with soft bulbs set on a dimmer make this cluster a work of art.

Accent lighting can be the most comforting and even sexy accessory in your home.  While needing light is necessary for everyday tasks, so it also is for setting the right frame of mind while relaxing after a long day. Get cozy with the right lighting today.

The Updated Beach Bungalow

The term ‘beach bungalow’ has grown to mean much more than what it did in its humble beginnings.  A small cottage of rustic materials surrounded by a veranda may still describe some, but no matter the size the Updated Beach Bungalow is big on personality and far from humble.

Defining this shabby chic meets modern look is a difficult thing to put your finger on.  There are common threads that once pulled together just simply personify the chic beach house movement.  One trend across the board in this multifaceted style is large and sometimes floor to ceiling windows allowing the light to pour into the room.

Another common denominator in this beach vibe is the emblematic white canvas.  Floor to ceiling white walls, white tiles and natural linens create a fresh atmosphere that is relaxed and comforting. A bold pop of color in this sea of white is crisp and adds interest to a room.  Even adding a black valance and throw is still light and bright as seen in the images below.

Exposed vaulted ceilings dressed in white are reminiscent of the classic beach cottage.  Whether your ceiling is finished in bead board or crown molding, the key to capturing the bungalow look is all in the color white.  From there you can mix in earthy rugs and accessories, or keep a muted color palette like the soft lilac bedroom below for an ultra-feminine look.

The basics are covered.  The rest is up to your style.  Whether you enjoy modern, Hollywood glam, or shabby chic, there is a place for your style in the updated beach bungalow.  The shabby chic slip cover can be mixed into a room with a more contemporary feeling as shown in the Malibu home in the images below.

Rustic modern, the style de jour, has even crept into beach bungalow category.  That natural element plays perfectly into this timeless style with reclaimed wood walls, vanities, tables and floors.  The natural wood tones add warmth to the bungalow look and a touch of masculinity.

Kitchen colors have brightened up in many style categories, especially in the bungalow style.  White cabinets with Carrera marble counter tops and back splashes are hot and on-trend.  At Jigsaw we are seeing a new direction with backsplashes in a single solid slab of material used instead of individual tiles.  If you are a tile fan as many are, then a rule to follow would be to stick to simple white tiles avoiding fussy patterns and multiple colors.  After you’ve muted your palette, then adding a fun stripe, nautical print, or solid pop of color to your chairs or curtains will liven up your kitchen.

Coffee Table Trends-What’s Hot Right Now

The classic rectangle coffee table is quickly being passed over for newer and more updated shapes.  Current trends that are making waves include fresh new takes on round, square, mixed metal, and Lucite.  In this post we’ll explore some fun and exciting looks to freshen up your space.  Most rooms like the image of the white room with the black metal table consist of existing rectangular shapes from the sofa, rug, and even the room itself.  Therefore placing a more organic shape like round or kidney creates a better flow for the eye to follow.

Black Round

The round coffee table has become increasingly popular and can be found in so many varieties.  The Jigsaw Designers love mixing metal into a space for a touch of industrial modern.  The gold leaf Modern Glam table below is fresh and light enough to add into most any room.

Round Metal Arabesque

Carrera marble is the hottest look for kitchens and bathrooms renovations. Therefore this look is trending into the furniture market as well.  The marble makes a beautiful table top for coffee tables, and creates a look that is clean, bright and eye catching.  The mix of Carrera and the vintage look of the gold leaf legs in the image below are the perfect juxtaposition of modern and vintage.

Brass Marble Round

If you like the metal trend, but don’t want to love it for too long, CB2 designs a chrome and Carrera table that’s very affordable as seen pictured below.  Metal and wood styles nod to the industrial vibe that is still going strong, and the solid wood round or square tables will also fit nicely into the industrial modern look for a more organic feel.

We are also seeing a surge in tufted ottomans used as table again.  The beauty of a tufted ottoman is that you can recover as the trends in color and fabric change.  They have a timeless feel and have slightly more flexibility in their use.  In the images below, both the round tufted orange and the turquoise blue really pop in these rooms and give them added personality.

Turq Square Tufted

While Lucite is a strong material in many areas of design, the Lucite coffee table is sometimes the perfect addition to a room.  The square table below seems to float in the room’s monochromatic palate, not disturbing the serenity.   Furthermore, a Lucite table can complete a room and allow for the natural elements like light from a window or a rug to take center stage as shown in the second image of the round Lucite table.

Square coffee tables have also become increasing popular like their relative square dining table.  The square table creates a perfect balance in sitting areas, and allows for better flow to the living area.  We love the white square table below for its intricate detail while being simple in shape and color.  It adds interest to a room with an artistic flair.

Smokey mirrors are being used on walls, dressers, dining tables and even coffee tables.  From clean and contemporary to antiqued and ornate this look is on the rise.

The Modern Murphy Bed

The desire for more space is a resounding request we hear every day from our clients at Jigsaw Design.  Whether the space is needed for a guest room, home office, kid’s playroom or all three in one, multifunctional rooms and more space are on the top of our client’s want list.  While being used since the early 1900’s, the Murphy bed has been a space saving solution that has stood the test of time.  Mr. Murphy’s naughty intent to coax women into his San Francisco bachelor pad lead him to create a design that still thrives today.  In this post we will show some unique and downright cool Murphy beds that are nothing like the infamous Charlie Chaplin bouncing beds from the days of silent films.

black murphy

The Murphy bed is an excellent solution for adding space, but it comes with a rather high price tag.  A custom designed Murphy bed, depending on the features you want to include, can set you back $3K to $10K.  Custom cabinetry can be built in as well as lighting, book shelves and technology.  If you are a city dweller looking for a Murphy bed to sleep on every night, then a custom designed bed will be the best route.  Also in keeping with your custom designed home, finding a prefabricated bed with high-end appeal may present some challenges.

Black doors

While not giving you the more luxurious feel and aesthetics of the custom bed, there are dozens of prefab Murphy beds available at market for more reasonable prices.   This is an excellent solution for a guest room.  Your office, playroom, craft room or sewing room can double as a guest room in an instant.  A quality prefab Murphy beds run about $1,000-$3,000 with professional installation.

If you are somewhat handy and on a budget, then Murphy kits are available on line to install yourself.  These beds can be attached to the wall or floor inside an existing closet and viola…extra bed and out of sight!  Most kits run between $300-$400 and work smoothly and easily.

The quality of sleep you or your guest will have on the Murphy system will far surpass that of a futon or air mattress.  Whatever direction you choose for your Murphy bed this is a fantastic idea as a space saver.  Considering the cost of adding extra square footage to your home the Murphy is a steal!

The Art Deco Revival

Art Deco took shape as the technology and machine age emerged after WWI.  It represented strength, glamour, and hope for a bright future for the world.  Likewise we embrace the rapidly changing and ever evolving world we live in, therefore it seems only fitting for this enduring style to take center stage again.

We’ve seen glimpses of the Art Deco trend upon us with the infiltration of black, white, gold and blush into the marketplace.  In stepping away from the cold modern interiors of yesterday, we are seeing new shapes, monochromatic color schemes and more details.  Patterns are bolder, more geometric and circular, and full of movement with textures becoming more involved and luxurious.

Using a monochromatic color scheme and a few choice items such as patterned wallpaper, a great Deco chandelier or a scroll bench at the foot of the bed can bring your space up to trend in an instant.  A few great pieces like these are worth the splurge to add to your eclectic room.

Some of the hottest Parisian antique markets have seen an influx of Art Deco furnishings such as these gorgeous chrome chairs we found on our most recent scouting trip.  The markets are no bargain but the quality is amazing and you can get one of kind items by famous artists and designers like the lamp featured below in the photos.

After years of Modern and Hollywood Regency being the leading styles in the market, the Art Deco trend is a breath of fresh air.  The Jigsaw Designers love mixing styles and textures, so adding key elements of the Deco trend can work perfectly into the aforementioned styles.   A Deco rug in a Hollywood Regency room blends perfectly in this beautiful monochromatic bedroom below.

The Diary of a Cool Kid’s Room

In our faced paced world, we want our bedroom to be a retreat from the stresses and responsibilities of everyday life.  Well, just like us our kids and teens crave that same escape.  Creating a bedroom that expresses your child’s personality will make them feel loved and understood, as well as at home.   The Jigsaw Designers are continually creating fun and unique ideas for child and teen bedrooms that are approachable and can actually be adapted into any home…this is not a post on ‘extreme’ kid’s rooms, because let’s face it, not everybody has a forty thousand dollar budget to work with.  This post will show some special touches and guidelines to theme out your cool kid’s chic abode.

What child wouldn’t want a swing in his or her room?  Sound crazy?  The following room pulled it off by having an uncluttered room to start with, and using a clean color palate.  Using white as a base color which gives a crisp look to the room, and then layering with gray and a pop of bold neon yellow for the eye to follow is a perfect combination for this featured boys room.  Once you’ve chosen your overall theme, or whimsical design idea, it’s best to stick to two or three main colors and begin building your story from there.  In the following photos in the Bubble swing girl’s room, the base color is white with pops of pink for color.  The Bubble Swing and furry poofs add hipster flair and whimsy to the space.

A girly-girl’s room isn’t a girl’s room without at least a little bling.  For added sparkle add foil wallpaper to the ceiling and let it shine with one, maybe two, oh make it three chandeliers.  This is a room a girl can really grow into, tweaking the throw pillows and accessories over time.

Channel her inner Marie Antoinette if that is just not enough by adding strands of crystal beads hung in a circle around a chandelier for a look that’s perfectly over the top.

Layered black and charcoal are the ultimate cool for the hip teen boy’s room.  This rock n roll chic look really pops with the light box table from DWR.  Dress the room up with their favorite bands memorabilia and they will be in their comfort zone.  Adding a touch of color to the black and charcoal palate is also very pleasing to the eye.  Bright orange, turquoise or neon yellow are great choices for a boy’s room.

Keep your little athlete (or busy body) moving by installing a rock climbing wall in their bedroom.  Kits for home install can be purchased by companies like Atomic for those looking for a DYI project.  The possibilities are endless for designing your wall, and can be a fun bonding time project for you and your little one.

A loft space is a great way to combine a playroom and a bedroom in one space, but with a feeling of two.   It gives them a sense of their own special place to relax and read, or play music with their friends while not taking over another room in the house.     We like the simplicity of these lofts for the minimalism and creativity.  These tricked out rooms take the idea of the bunk bed to new heights.

Teenagers, as lovely as they are, are known to be loud and of course narcissistic.  We’ve found two great solutions for both of these…symptoms. First are upholstered walls!  What a fantastic way to sound proof their space where the music is always too loud.  And, we found a great solution for the era of the ‘selfie’…viola… Polaroid wallpaper.  With careful placement using Polaroid images will not only be a great history lesson about the pre-digital world, but it can create a really fun and interesting look for your teen’s room.

We all want our kids to view the family home as place they want to be.  Their refuge from the crazy world, and have it be cool at the same time to share with their friends.  Making their room over with their input will be great one on one time and allow them to help create a space to call their own.  Have fun and enjoy!

Reinventing the Classics

We dedicate this post to the old adage that ‘history repeats itself’; and with that, no furniture designer/architect team continues to resurface like Charles and Ray Eames.  Interestingly enough Charles’ vision was so futuristic he was kicked out of the first university he attended for being too ‘modern’.

While both Charles and Ray were born and raised in the US, their tendency for the Danish modern style and techniques were the cornerstone of their illustrious careers.  This dynamic duo rolled out hit after hit and their fame is still growing today.

The classic designs are still being sold today through many institutions such as Design Within Reach and Herman Miller to name a few.  But, we are seeing these classic beauties pop up in fresh new ways.  Following are images of a few of our favorite reinvented  classic dining chairs; big bold floral painted prints, spray paint, and even…yes…white duct tape.  Why not?

The iconic business office chair or “work” chair being part of the Aluminum Group is steadfast and true.  The official “desk” chair of the Jigsaw Design offices, I might add, is also popping up in printed fabrics instead of leather.  The pink and white print could make a great substitute for a glider in a baby nursery and the womb lounger is just so cool covered in Proenza Schouler fabric.

Relax-Unique Outdoor Spaces

In the heat of the summer, the pool calls your name and the sun draws you outdoors into its presence.  Create a unique boutique hotel poolside escape right in your own backyard and enjoy a” stay-cation” this summer.  In this post we will cover chic and sexy tips for creating a mood altering outdoor retreat for you to worship the sun, dine with friends, and even catch some zzz’s.

When creating your unique outdoor space the first rule of thumb is to bring some elements of style from the indoors to the outdoors.  For example, if your style is modern with bold black and white colors throughout your home, then it’s best to look for clean modern lines for the patio furniture.  Furthermore while bringing some black and white onto the patio; you have the freedom to add a pop of color for the outside.  This will make the overall look of your home flow well.

Clean moroccon

Once you’ve chosen your theme and design elements to compliment your indoor space, it’s time to pull together the décor.   We’ve been searching for unique furniture ideas to create a one of a kind space that is completely functional.  We are in love with the hanging beds in the following images…getting sleepy already?

Hanging Bed hang bed 2

On a recent trip to the Dominican Republic we strolled on a beach lined with these wicker orbs.  Imagine a lazy afternoon in one of these in your own backyard, dreaming you’re away on a heavenly vacation.

The poolside lounger is a must have for that St. Tropez tan we all desire.  The Jigsaw team just installed a black and white themed outdoor living space in Palm Springs, CA.  The designers used Black and White polka dot loungers for a pop of whimsy at this chic California home.

MP Polka

Other loungers we are drawn to are meant more for reading and relaxing that sunning.  The mid-century modern pink lounger adds a bold pop of color, while the circular lounger is a statement making art piece.

pink lounger Curly Chair

Another trend that keeps popping up is fake grass.  As the craze continues for real grass yards to be replaced with faux grass, we continue to see this kitschy element sneaking into the furniture and accessory markets.   Grassy chairs, ottomans, bars and pillows.  In the following images you will see an entire outdoor space constructed of natural and faux grass.  Though we are not sure how comfortable that might be, it is thought provoking.

Astro Turf Grassy Lounge

If you find these images enticing but don’t have a patio or terrace…no problem, just create one.  Using a large piece of fabric for a canopy and a little imagination, you can create an outdoor space anywhere.  Here you will see how a great functional space was created using white fabric as a canopy and white rocks to distinguish the space from the rest of the yard.

Sheet Canopy Sheet Canopy Lakeside

If you are looking to create something more substantial, consider converting that old shed or detached garage into an adult playhouse.  These custom created get-a-ways are perfect for adding the outdoor space you need if your home doesn’t have a built in patio or deck.

Garden Structure Beachy Structure Tee Pee Curved structure

Whatever type of outdoor space speaks to you albeit chic mid-century modern or a Moroccan bohemian Kasbah; step outside the lines of norm and have fun creating your unique get-a-way.  In the busy world we live in everybody needs one.  Bon Voyage!
