Lemon Yellow-Summer’s Color

As summer approaches we naturally crave warm sunny colors like lemon yellow, which is arguably the happiest color in the spectrum.  This cheeky color was the hot color for spring runways during New York’s fashion week.  In this post we will explore fun ways to add lemon yellow to your space to catch this summer loving trend.

Yellow Chandelier

Yellow Hunter

This playful hue has big personality and blends well with most colors.  For wow factor, pop lemon yellow in a navy and white room.  The look is crisp and the yellow lightens the weight of the navy creating a cheery mood.

Yellow and Navy

The Jigsaw Designers love the classic look of lemon yellow with black and white that transcends time.  While the following spaces have a midcentury feel they still remain sharp and modern.  The cheerfulness of the yellow keeps the black and white from appearing too formal or serious.  Even the restaurant in the images below with all black interiors play off as happy and light with the yellow epoxy floors.

Being a very optimistic color this natural hue, inspired by lemons, is always associated with sunshine and happiness.  Yellow  is proven to stimulate the mind and is believed to be physically revitalizing.  The energy is obvious in the rooms below; even with the layers of bright colors the yellow is a blast of energy that brings balance to these ultra feminine spaces.

Yellow being the symbol of joy and peace in the Chinese Feng Shui theory, it can be used in any room of the home, even in the bathroom. We love these quirky tiles in the bathrooms below.  The patterns are interesting and the fun pop of yellow give these small rooms a lift.

Lighten you mood with sunny lemon yellow wether a little or lot, it will brighten your day.  While the list of bright yellow paint colors are great, our favorite lemon yellow is called Lemon Twist by Benjamin Moore.

Let It Shine with Gold Accessories

Gold accessories and furniture bring the perfect sparkle that every home needs.  From a small accessory to a grand console, in this post we will explore the Jigsaw Design Team’s top picks in gold objects.

john legend gold stools

When seeking the ideal finishing touches to your space, look for objects that speak to you.  Unique pieces that are high quality are guaranteed conversation starters.  We love the Kaleidoscope gold orb by Kelly Wearstler for a table top or console.

Gold objects with a function are a great accessory in an area that you entertain guests.  These luxury games make perfect ice breakers for those just getting to know each other.  How about a game of tic tac toe?

For all you gold diggers who want to make a statement, we love the gold Sputnik Chandelier by Jonathan Adler.  It is a great mix of retro and modern and fits nicely in the dining room, living room or boudoir.  We also love the chunky gold coffee table and console from ZGallerie.  While having a shape of natural rock it makes a big glam statement with an organic twist.

While gold accessories go with every color, we especially like the shine of gold mixed with black interiors that screams sexy and elegant. Adding white into the mix creates a striking look that allows your eyes to dance around the room from shimmer to shimmer.  For a spring refresher, the JDG Designers like mixing gold with all white interiors for a relaxing feeling that takes you away to the Greek Islands.

Adding touches of accessories to shelves and table tops in “must have’ styles set the tone of the room.  We love the rocker vibe candle holders from CB2, great lined up across a mantel or down the center of your dining table for an understated look.  Or simple adding a gilded mirror for a touch of regal vintage will add flare and interest to the room.

Shades of Grey

As the many shades of grey prevail as the leading colors for both the fashion and home interiors market,  there is no doubt that grey is the new neutral!  With the era of taupe and beige long behind us, we step into the chic and lovely world of grey interiors.

Navy Grey office Grey cabinets

This calming color while being so subtle can add such a powerful impact.  From a middle tone grey in a stylish rustic modern home, or adding a relaxed elegance to a more traditional home, this versatile color has no boundaries.

The list of fabulous grey paint colors is endless, however we will discuss a few of the Jigsaw Designers favorite and most requested shades.  We’ll explore shades from lightest to darkest.  Starting with Farrow and Ball’s light grey called Skimming Stone that is almost taupe for those lovers of all things taupe.  This shade is perfect for those looking for a change, but nothing too drastic.

Our most beloved shade in light grey is by Benjamin Moore called Grey Owl. It’s understated yet perfectly sophisticated for a calm and airy bedroom or luxurious living room.

If you are seeking a bit of drama especially for a feature wall, then a darker grey or charcoal would be a great choice.  The shade Monument by Pantone Universe is our absolute favorite.  A darker color makes a big impact in a small space too, so don’t be afraid to paint your bathroom, home office or other petite location in a striking charcoal color.

Complete your serene room with an overall grey palette.  We love this room for it’s dark grey panels, paired with the soft grey sofa and charcoal chevron rug.  There is nothing dull about this grey room where depth and elegance abound.

Layer on the grey from floor to ceiling to create an inviting and sophisticated world.  The charcoal beam ceilings and grey washed hardwood floors set the tone for this modern yet seemingly cozy space.  The grey sofa, white walls, and dramatic black-and-white art all blend together for an elevated look.

Grey is a safe color that plays wells with many other colors like black, white, yellow, pinks, blues and most neutrals.  Depending on your style it can be a graceful backdrop for a monochromatic pallet or bold accent colors like acid yellow for a fun and arty look.   Wherever your love of grey may lie, this new neutral is a color you need now, so grab your paintbrush and get painting.  Enjoy, and don’t forget to subscribe!

Men’s Suiting Trend

There is something about men’s suiting that feels timeless.  The fabrics, colors, patterns and texture may vary, but they never venture far from the root of what they are.  Menswear has become an inspiration for women’s fashion over the last year and this rich tailored look has now made its way into home interiors in a fresh new way.  Suiting inspired design in masculine colors like charcoal, navy and tan are not just for the quintessential bachelor pad anymore, it is a very warm and cozy look for cohabitation and even the whole family to enjoy.  In this post we will explore some ways to implement this look into your home in a small dose or even a complete overhaul.

pinstripe char and navy bedroom

navy bedroom

One of our favorite interpretations of the menswear styles is expressed through pinstripes.  Great pinstripe wallpaper can fit so nicely into a guest bathroom for just a touch of this tailored look, or down a long hall way for high impact.  We love this sitting area in the images below with the clean lines of the chrome furniture popping off the dark charcoal striped paper.  This creates an understated yet elegant look.

Want a quick pinstripe fix? Try recovering an old chair, stool or ottoman with Pinstripe fabric for instant style. Velvet is a great fabric for adding texture.  While it’s typically considered a feminine fabric it’s often found in men’s blazers and smoking jackets in darker colors.  We can’t get enough of this uber-cool navy pinstripe vintage chair with the brass framework.

Classic to the core, houndstooth is showing up with a whimsical new approach in interior design.  Oversized patterned pillows and throw add a punch to a monochromatic room to drive this exciting trend home.  Command your court in a houndstooth Louis XIV chair, or simply sit pretty in Danish modern chairs covered with a touch of feminine pink to break up the masculinity.

Texture plays the biggest role in the men’s suiting motif.  Flannel in trending in upholstery and bedding, and this timeless classic is soothing and cozy.  Pinstriped flannel or even soft grey are seen covering sofas, headboards and bedding like the images below.  Wool throws and pillows can add the perfect finishing touch to any room.  The Jigsaw Designers love draping a Hermes throw over a chair or sofa for a soft yet sophisticated touch.

If you like the men’s suiting look but prefer to lighten up your space then seersucker is a great way to incorporate the menswear look.  Seersucker couches, chairs and bedding are fresh, light and surprisingly versatile.  Using the fabric on the walls instead of wallpaper adds a unique texture and interest to the room.

The captivating menswear trend is an elegant look to bring into your home.  With accessories readily available this update can be done easily.  While being fresh and yet timeless your space will be cozy and tailored for the winter.

Floral Design Trends

A cutting edge floral arrangement can be the perfect finishing touch; other times it demands to be the main attraction.  The inspiration for this post on trends in floral design came from the breathtaking floral display at the George V in Paris.  While the images don’t begin to paint the picture of how amazing this floating purple blanket actually is, it certainly gives you a glimpse of the impact a flower can bring.

The floral trends this year according to the Floral Trend Forecast by the International Floral Distributors Association are broken down into four groups, Confetti, Grand Lodge, Revival and Aqua Culture.  Each category is broken down by pantone color and a general list of recommended flowers.  In this post we will share the different trend ideas by category.  We will start with the light and bright Confetti group.  This group includes fun, bright color with pop like Tangerine, Sunshine Yellow, Fuchsia, and Bright Green.  These inspiring flowers include Green Trick Dianthus, Pincushions, Zinnias and Gerber’s among others.

The Grand Lodge category is dear to our hearts with its earthy organic vibe.  Floral design artists are combining the following flowers with natural and rustic materials such as wood, metal and glass for optimum impact.  The colors are cream, stone, moss green, chestnut and blue-greys that are present in flowers such as white and green hydrangeas, white sweet peas, poppy pods, Dahlias, Anemone, Uhule fern tips and Hypericum.

Glamour and beauty are expressed through Art Deco design in the Revival category.  The colors in this palette reflect the A list trends we love right now, blush, mint, black, and gold.   Flowers include Calla Lilies, White Tulips, Pink Peony, Cymbidium Orchids and Istilbe.  Artists are mixing feathers, metal containers and even beads to add to the natural romanticism of these classic beauties.

Circling back to the George V and those unforgettable purple Hydrangeas that are part of the Aqua Collection category that reflects the deep blue, indigos, and purples found mostly in rare and unique flowers.  Orchids, Delphinium, Succulents, and Tillandsia are part of this captivating collection.  Floral designers are using textured ceramics and bubble shaped containers with a more organic feel.

Floral Design trends changes as quickly as any other design trends, so the best bet is to choose the flowers you love that compliment your space.  Try using only one type of flower for a clean, modern look; or mix many multiple flowers in monochromatic colors to give a soft romantic look.  Flowers will bring life and a happy feeling into your home whatever you choose.  Keep checking back for the 2015 trend forecast that will be coming soon.

The Art Deco Revival

Art Deco took shape as the technology and machine age emerged after WWI.  It represented strength, glamour, and hope for a bright future for the world.  Likewise we embrace the rapidly changing and ever evolving world we live in, therefore it seems only fitting for this enduring style to take center stage again.

We’ve seen glimpses of the Art Deco trend upon us with the infiltration of black, white, gold and blush into the marketplace.  In stepping away from the cold modern interiors of yesterday, we are seeing new shapes, monochromatic color schemes and more details.  Patterns are bolder, more geometric and circular, and full of movement with textures becoming more involved and luxurious.

Using a monochromatic color scheme and a few choice items such as patterned wallpaper, a great Deco chandelier or a scroll bench at the foot of the bed can bring your space up to trend in an instant.  A few great pieces like these are worth the splurge to add to your eclectic room.

Some of the hottest Parisian antique markets have seen an influx of Art Deco furnishings such as these gorgeous chrome chairs we found on our most recent scouting trip.  The markets are no bargain but the quality is amazing and you can get one of kind items by famous artists and designers like the lamp featured below in the photos.

After years of Modern and Hollywood Regency being the leading styles in the market, the Art Deco trend is a breath of fresh air.  The Jigsaw Designers love mixing styles and textures, so adding key elements of the Deco trend can work perfectly into the aforementioned styles.   A Deco rug in a Hollywood Regency room blends perfectly in this beautiful monochromatic bedroom below.

From wall furnishing to furniture there are dozens of ways to capture the Deco trend while it’s hot.  Grab some popcorn and rent a roaring 20’s flick and get inspired.  Happy decorating!

Black and White

The black and white color combination is simple and pure.  It can be whatever it wants to be, modern, traditional, or regal.  No other combination has stood the test of time more.  On a recent adventure to France we found ourselves immersed in a flood of black and white with a roaring 20’s vibe at a local jazz spot.  Black and white was used throughout the space in every room, but each room revealed a fresh take on this classic combination.  White chairs with black trim, each with its own cashmere striped wrap thrown over the back.  Glossy white columns and bold striped wall paper, wide striped curved ceilings, this place had it all to the last detail of wrapped toilet paper in black and white tissue.  Enamored by the ambiance we left with a burning desire for all things black and white.

Club Raye

Club Raye 2

To achieve a lighter brighter take on this look of a sea of black and white you must start first with the foundation color…white.  Starting with white will give your room a crisp clean look and from there you can add as much black to mix as you would like.  A black and white rug and throw pillows may be just enough.  If you want more of an impact, adding a stripe chair or sofa will create the perfect pop.  Another quick fix for adding this haute combo to your space is simply by adding black and white paint.  Horizontal and vertical stripes, painting the trim, or adding a border can give your space the wow factor you are looking for.

For a different perspective on the black and white combination, start with black as your base color.  While this bold use of color is very dramatic coincidentally it’s quite soothing.  Be adventurous and add a splash of stripe with a sofa in front of the black walls for a statement-making living room.  For a softer look add a white lamp and accessories to the black-draped walls mixed with muted bedding for a sexy bedroom.

If you are lifetime lover of black and white and are certain of a time commitment to this color combo then why not be bold and make it more permanent.  Black and white flooring is tried and true and works well in any style of home.  Bold square tile flooring is classic and lays a base for black and white accents throughout the space in the traditional salon in the images below.  Or try creating an all-white space with black and white floor tiles for a fresh clean look.

If you are committed but not to the point of flooring, then adding curtains or blinds with a stripe or boarder can be just enough touch and yet still be flexible with the look of the rest of the room.

This classic color combo can take so many different directions that this post could go on and on.  The dosage of black and white that you can handle is entirely up to you.  Whether it’s a few pillows and accessories or complete overhaul of black and white.  The theme is always in fashion and always commands attention.  Have fun creating your black and white world.  Enjoy!

Pretty in Navy and Pink

While being dawned by the A list celebs at the Oscars, these oh-so-complimentary colors have been a match made in interior design heaven.  Navy and pink are the perfect partners where masculine meets feminine in the home.  This stunning pair exudes balance and harmony in a spectacular fashion.

1st image

Navy is a powerful color that is associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes confidence, trust, wisdom, intelligence, faith, and truth.  While pink is a symbol of love and associated with nurturing and compassion.   Therefore the strength of a navy room is perfectly balanced with the delicate softness of pink.  Take this living room for example.  It is a dynamic room with a bold navy patterned rug, navy walls and furniture.  Alone, this would be a navy overdose, but it appears completely balanced with the perfect placement of the pink pillows and framed artwork.

Living room

Too much of a good thing isn’t always the best.  Layering navy and pink with other colors is an easy way to get the look without committing every item in your space to these two colors.  In the next two photos these bedrooms have neutrals mixed in to soften the look.  The gray pillows in the first room help mellow the bold navy and pink.   Likewise, the gold color pillows in the second image help break up the intensity of this compelling color combo.

Bed Close Up

Bedroom 1

The best foundation color to pop the navy and pink is crisp white.  Whether it’s mixed into a pattern or the color of the largest piece of furniture in the room, this base color is necessary for the two colors to be displayed in all their glory.  If you are drawn to this look and want to try trend but not make a huge investment, then try starting with navy and pink as accent colors on a mostly white backdrop.  Navy and pink throw pillows on a white sofa, with pink flowers in a vase on the table are the perfect start.   White bedding with navy and pink pillows and navy curtains is another more disposable way to get the trend without overkill.

Living Close up

Navy and pink together are refreshing and full of energy.  This color combo is a happy one and we know it will affect your mood.  Who wouldn’t feel blissful sitting at this gorgeous navy and pink make up table?  What a great place to start the day, and what a great time for a navy and pink update.

The Spanish Evolution

The quintessential ‘Spanish style’ in interior design has truly evolved. Think white, light and airy when it comes to the new modern take on this classic hacienda style.  The fine line between Spanish and Mediterranean is thinning as the shift from dark and heavy décor moves into bright seaside whites with touches of classical iron and cherry wood.  The days of over cluttered and ornate accessories and art are becoming a thing of the past as the Spanish style transitions to a more minimal approach.  Lines are becoming cleaner and more elegant which lends itself to show off important pieces of elaborate art, tapestries and patterns.  In the image below, this light and airy room is so inviting with its crisp white walls, curtains and sofas.  The touches of iron for the curtain rods and lamps reflect the root of the Spanish style as well as the exposed beam ceilings.  The lines in the ceiling seem to sweep you softly to the outdoors among the cactus garden in nature’s own flora and fauna landscape.

White Living Room

The spirit of the Spanish style always feels like a vacation, but the contemporary hacienda has a chic new twist.  Clean nearly blank walls all in white, with one bright accent wall to pop a piece of Spanish artwork.  Mixing modern or mid-century modern furniture and flooring makes this new modern Spanish style unique and fresh.  Brightly colored tiles mixed with neutral or grey walls and antiques create a youthful vibe with old world bones.  Spanish style and tiles are really coming back but with more color and pattern options.  More options than the traditional brown and gold tones we used to be limited to.  The Jigsaw Designers love mixing these floor tiles in a bathroom with rustic modern pieces like a large black pained shower glass doors, reclaimed cabinets with Carrera countertops, and a vintage iron chandelier.

Modern span Mexican tile spanish tile

Consider wall tapestries and Spanish theme artwork when you update your decor. While giving focus to the room, wall art is an excellent opportunity to enhance your hacienda design theme.    While keeping the overall look white and bright, add a color indigenous to the Mediterranean and Spanish regions in colors of creamy ivory, gold, turquoise blues, rich greens and deep red and of course terra cotta.  High ceilings, concrete floors, and exposed beams are all typical elements of the Spanish style and can be the perfect canvas to express the Hacienda flavor.  In the bedroom image below the ceilings are very high, the color palate in greens and terra cotta, and while being a bit dark (which is typically Spanish), it is not cluttered with art work and accessories.  The space and rich colors are simply allowed to flow and the look really works.

Orange bedroom

Combining the grandeur of bold artwork with the organic look of iron wall decor and the rustic appeal of Spanish Hacienda furniture can make your rooms feel more interesting and inviting.  Furnish your space with touches of iron candle holders, candelabras, lanterns, hurricanes and wall sconces which are classic to Spanish and Mediterranean design.  All with keeping the lines cleaner and color palette brighter will give focus to the room and provide an excellent opportunity to enhance your updated Spanish-chic decorating theme.

Back in Black

Upon the dawning of the little black dress in 1926, Coco Chanel made the color black instantly chic.  Since then the infamous color has encapsulated style, class and edge.    The unwritten rule in interior design has been to add something black to every room.  Well, today that ‘something’ has taken on a much larger role.  Explore with us the different ways to add this daring color to your home with this ultra-hot trend.

The Jigsaw Designers love adding black paint to the walls in any room.  One black accent wall can make a huge impact whether you are painting a large or small area.  A narrow wall at the end of a hallway, the large wall behind your headboard, whatever your comfort level is it will add high impact style.  Next, choosing accessories in bright colors and metallics will really pop off the black and add drama.  Adding a white crown molding or all white bedding to your bedroom can give the room balance and a crisp finish.  The sophistication of this color will also create attention to the focal point of the room.  However a wide range of black paint is available, our designers prefer using Matte Black which made its big come-back with celebrity automobiles.  It’s more versatile and forgiving than a glossy finish, and adds the greatest wow factor in a room.  The matte black look is hot and has been on the rise recently and is just finding its way into home interiors.  While black is always in style the new matte black is taking center stage and we love it.

Black Study Black Bedroom

Always the color of optical illusion, this powerful hue is sexy and mysterious.   We recently did a post on decorating your ceiling to complete the look of your space.   Don’t let us stop you from adding black to the ceiling either.  While one would think it would make the room appear smaller it’s actually quite the opposite effect.  The black painted ceiling when complimented by lighter walls and ample natural light will result in an infinite look that makes a room feel as if it goes on forever.

Black Ceiling 2

Black Ceiling

Chances are your mother always told you to add something black to every room.  Well, at the time she was probably referring to a piece of furniture or a picture frame and not an entire wall.  This still deems great advice however.  If you want to try the trend, but are a bit more color shy, it can easily be incorporated with furniture and accessories.  If you are a bit more brave, try a piece on a grandeur scale like a sofa or buffet table.  Otherwise, a black framed mirror, vintage chair or lamp can be a nice start.

We hope you will be inspired to experiment with the color black in any room of your home.  It can be the perfect anchor in a room or spice up a hallway that gets overlooked.   Forget all the myths you’ve been told about this adventurous color and decorate outside the lines!
